Mel Joelle's Articles in Books

  • New Comics Continue
EVERY comic book is a horror comic book from the perspective of a tree. Imagine if a plant handed you a book, with brightly colored versions of super-powered plants. Not so creepy but what if the book was printed on MULCHED UP HUMAN SKIN?!
  • The Heroic Routine Super Heroes in New Comics
FIRST OFF, Galacta: Daughter of Galactus one shot is out this week by Empowered creator Adam Warren. I expect you all to buy a copy. Two copies if you can. Adam is one of the brightest talents in the biz.
  • Craziest Haircuts in Comics
Superman's spit-curl, Wolverine's muttonchops, Professor X's chrome dome; Comic books have their fair share of iconic hairdos, but with a multitude of pan-dimensional weirdos running around in spandex and capes, it also has its fair share of hair based powers, hairy characters and even a few animals to get things REALLY hairy.
  • Darkness Falls In MangaLand
Oh yeah, let the dark, eerie, and gothic fans herald their day for it is here. No I'm not just being dismal, but it is a little funny how one of the dark titles coming in this week is Black Butler Volume 2 by Yana Toboso, which just saw the release of Volume 1 last week.
  • He-Man and the Way of the Comic Book
The countdown begins! At the time of this writing there are only SEVEN days until mattycollector.com, the online store of toy mega-giant Mattel that caters to fans and collectors puts its latest and greatest Masters of the Universe rescuplt figure on sale!
  • What to Get After Free Comic Book Day
Good ole Free Comic Book Day has come and gone. What do we have to fill up the void in our hearts that it has left behind? How about this upcoming Wednesday, a day so amazing in its selection of incredible new releases I just had to declare it: NOT-Free Comic-Book-DAY!
  • The Legend Continues
Welcome to another exciting issue of your favorite manga updater. I know some of you are wondering what legend, and why is it continuing? A) I like Kung Fu, the old show, and the second series they made where Caine had a son who was a cop. And B) there seems to be only one series premier out of the whole lot.
  • Butlers And Vigilantes
There are quite a few books this week, and also a lot of premiers, so let's jump right into it. Finally, after you have all waited with bated breath, here comes the first volume of Black Butler by Yana Toboso (many of you might still know it as Kuroshitsuji). For anyone not familiar with it, here's a synopsis: Just a stone's throw from London stands the manor house of the illustrious Phantomhive earldom.
  • New Comic Releases 1 Comic Issues
There's two businesses to Comic Books. In one, artists and writers try (And mind you I did say TRY) to draw, write and create the most amazing, spectacular sequential story they possibly can. On a monthly title, surpassing past successes can be a daunting challenge.
  • Black Blizzards Beat Gundam
So its a reeeeally small week this week, about 10 books. Three of those books are Mobile Suit Gundam related. First up is the 9th (and I believe final) volume of Gundam: Ecole Du Ciel. In case you were curious, Ecole Du Ciel first started coming out in the states in 2005. That's five years to put out 9 books. The only excuse for that kind of fan-teasing is some horrible debilitating disease that left the artist minus both their hands for a couple years.
  • Zombies, Robots and Barbarians
Some fairly decent stuff this week. Let's hope the snows of Baltimore do not destroy, delay and other wise defray our comic books from getting from Diamond to our hot little hands.
  • Vampires in Comic Books
Depending on your point of view this could be the golden age of vampires in popular culture OR, as many old school horror fans feel, a time of a great and calamitous darkness. They feel like the elf queen Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings, that the once fun and fertile world of vampires as sexy, horrible undead monsters is slowly dying, transforming into a new age of emotional vampires with guilt and girlfriends, fueled less by hatred and more by teen angst.
  • Comic Books of the New Year
Last week's reprieve from the comics publishing schedule meant we could save up our ducats for this week's bumper crop! Of course, we spent that money on New Years beer and Karaoke. Sigh, time to break the piggie bank!
  • Crogans of Schweitzer
Though he's warm, friendly and one dang hard worker with a clean but fluid style, Chris Schweitzer is not a cartoonist you might have heard of. You're more likely to run across him in the pages of Comics Journal than you will Wizard. His art isn't flashy but a nuanced blend of intuition built on the pillars of experience and reverence for those who came before him.
  • Week Of Awesome: Naruto, Pokemon Adventures and more!
Why is this week so awesome? Well, it is the first week of February and Viz has decided its time once again to avalanche us with titles. And I mean that in a good way. First and foremost, Naruto Volume 47 is here, and you know you fans have been fiending for it. Pain is attacking Konoha and they've taken heavy damages. The toads are doing the best they can but it won't be enough.
  • One the Run
That's right ladies, this is a shoujo kind of week. Not completely of course, that would just be bad marketing of their parts, but damn is it heavy with cute and/or romance stuff. But more than that, it is also a week of premiers. First and foremost of which is the new book by Benjamin (Orange, Flash) who's known for a very painted style of CG art. His new book is called Remember and is about stories of love and loss and losing your inhibitions.
  • Hogwash: No New Comic Books
It was decided by a horde of crazed wood-elves that this final week of 2009 would see virtually NO NEW COMIC BOOKS. This can be a pain in the power-ring when you are a freelance comic book reporter in need of a good story.
  • Holiday Madness
I was watching the Flintstones the other day and noticed that Fred reads a newspaper that is two solid slabs of rocks with carvings etched into them. These rocks are held together via a crude rope.
