Wooden doors may look nice, but they have a lot of problems attached to them. Just because they are the traditional choice for homes, it does not mean they are the right one. After buying one, a lot of people will actually live to regret their decision. And that is why more and more people are opting for uPVC doors instead.

Because composite doors are not affected by the weather there are never going to be any problems with warping. Plastic does not move like wood does, so it will be completely unaffected by the damp (which we seem to have an awful lot of in Britain). With wooden doors, this is a constant problem. It does not take much for them to swell or twist with the wet and they can often become very difficult to open and close.

Another great thing about uPVC doors is they require so very little maintenance. A quick wipe over with a damp cloth will instantly restore them to their former glory. This is a world away from the different treatments which have to be routinely applied to wooden ones. If you don’t mind spending hours applying different lacquers to your door then this is fine, but with a plastic one you just don’t need to worry about it.

Security is extremely important as well. At the end of the day, a door is there to keep out unwanted guests as well as the weather. And composite doors are vastly superior in this way as well. There are very good locking mechanisms on the basic ones, but you can also spend a little bit more money and get yourself something with even more reinforcement. Plastic doors are well known for being incredibly strong and burglars will normally target wooden ones, as they are easier to get into.

Some people are put off from buying plastic doors for their homes as they are under the impression that it will boil down to a choice of white... or white. This is quite a popular misconception, but it is far from the truth. Things have moved on and there are many different colours and styles to choose from. And if you still like the thought of a wooden door (even after knowing about their faults) then you can find plenty of uPVC doors that are purposely designed to look like timber.

And that is why plastic has largely taken over from wood. There are still a few wooden doors for sale, but the majority of the market is taken up with plastic ones. They are just so much more practical.

As for finding a supplier of uPVC, composite or rock doors, the best place to start looking is online. There are a huge amount of companies to choose from on the internet and you can see exactly which designs they stock. Buying online may also work out a lot cheaper. These suppliers do not have the same overheads as large showrooms and they are able to pass on their savings to their customers.
