Balance bikes provide many benefits in coaching your youngster to ride. Why you may ask? Simply put, a balance bike has no pedals, thus a youngster is required to use his / her feet to to make contact with the ground and unlike the traditional bike, each toddler’s development is at their own individual pace; with the child being in total control of how far they go by using their feet to move the bike.

When the child is secure in taking his / her feet off the ground, they are able to do so without anxiety of falling and not being capable to stop in time, as their feet are close to the ground at all times. Children seem to identify impulsively what to do on a bike, and without the issues of learning pedals, steering, brakes at once, a balance bike offers the chance to gain assurance in the most challenging skill of all, being able to balance. Balance bikes enable children to have fun, and more importantly, it gives them a chance to become skilled at co-ordination, teaching key motor skills as they go. As your toddler’s assurance grows on the running bike, they quickly progress to gliding by running forward then “freewheeling” as far as possible. As they glied, they learn how to balance naturally and the transition to a normal bike without stabilisers is quick and easy, for both parent and child. Balance bikes are an perfect way for your toddler to learn to balance first, gain confidence in handling and controlling a bike as it moves. They learn co-ordination, motor skills and most importantly, trust in themselves. So how do you teach a youngster to ride a running bike? Well it’s easy, alot easier and less frustrating than training your youngster to ride a bike with pedals for the first time.

Make sure your child has the proper clothing and a well fitted kid’s helmet. On a flat ground, with absolutely no hills or slopes, allow your child to sit on the bike with both feet touching the ground. At his own pace, he / she will experiment with using his feet to move the bike as fast or as slow as they feel secure with. Don’t push your toddler, allow them to get used to the bike at their pace. In their own time, your child will in due course glide on the bike. This is an key step as it’s this phase that reinforces the lesson in balance or if they need more time. Your toddler will show when he / she is ready to ride a bike with pedals. Once your toddler has his/her own pedal bike and he/she is seated in the saddle of the bike, take hold of the handle bars and ensure it is secure before asking your youngster to place his feet on the pedals. You will need to explain that he/she needs to push down on each pedal to be able to progress. Keep hold of the bike as he / she begins to pedal and go with your youngster until he / she feels certain to go it alone. Learning to ride a bike is one of life’s greatest little joys, and challenges for children.
