You have to admit that it gets tougher and tougher, whether you're buying a birthday present, an anniversary gift or a Christmas present. How much time do you spend thinking about it and looking through department store after department store even searching online only to come up with nothing original.

gift baskets are not new, but they have evolved a great deal over the last 15 years or so. Generally, present baskets are "last minute" gifts, a quick stop at a department store, grab a present basket and continue to your destination. Now, don't get me wrong, that option is still available, but there is now so much more. We started giving present baskets for a number of occasions, including Christmas. If I have a special gift in mind for someone, that's great…job done move on, but that rarely happens these days. I now find myself struggling to find that 'perfect' present, so I did something different a few years ago, I made present baskets.

I got the idea from baskets I used to give to clients and suppliers, the simple thing would have been to buy pre-made baskets of wine or chocolate, something like that, but I wanted it to be more personal. I actually purchased empty baskets, some "filler" and then I filled them myself, wine, chocolates - joke gifts, company items, different things and each was different and "individualized". They were a giant hit, so I thought I would expand that to my personal life, family and friends.
I did the same thing, empty baskets and the I made "theme" baskets, a golf theme for my brother, with all the "small" things that can fit in a basket, golf balls, tees, golf glove, golf shirts and season golf passes at our local course. For my wife, it was a "pampering" theme, body lotions, bath salts, fragrant candles…the works. Now, you don't have to do themes, you can use random items that you've purchased, music, movies, gift cards, whatever you can think of you can make work in the basket.

Other things you might consider for women in your life, jewellery (always a favorite) for the woman who enjoys gardening, a basket containing a garden trowel, gloves, decorative garden picks, seeds, and hand lotion. For the tea lover, a perfect basket would consist of flavored teas, biscotti, a tea infuser, and a china tea pot. Like I said before, personalized is the key, make is something special and distinctive for every woman.

Men are always hard to buy for, fill the basket with small tools and gadgets he is always saying he needs but never buys himself. Don't forget to put in some treats to fill out the basket. There are great options out there for sports lovers in every category. If you are thinking about something with a little more style, a bottle of cognac, his favorite cigars, and gourmet treats may appeal to him, use your imagination…he will enjoy opening it and you'll have fun putting it together.
Now, "building a basket" is really cool, but if you are in a pinch and have a few items for someone, there is nothing wrong with buying a pre-made basket and adding your own little surprises to make it special. I would suggest wrapping the basket in cellophane, there are lots of choices, whether for birthday or holidays. When I went to a last minute house party, I made 3 stops on the way, I picked up a fruit basket, then I stopped at a chocolate shop (gotta have the sweet stuff) and lastly a wine store, the result was great and it appeared we put a lot of time and work into the basket.
