Deciding on a patio cover layout is a personal taste. If an engineer designed your patio then the cover will most likely need a professional contractor’s touch. A professional contractor can help you decide on a patio cover suitable for your patio or deck and explain some of the products capable of surviving the extreme high desert climate.

Places like the High Desert experience extreme summers and near constant Santa Ana Winds. The winters can be blistering cold and your patio cover will feel every extreme of those conditions day in and day out.

Before you consult a remodeling contractor to help you construct your patio cover, consider doing some research first. Ponder the patio's primary use, will the patio be used for entertaining friends and family?
For example, a place to put your barbecue, a table and some chairs. Are you imagining an enclosed or climate controlled patio design, or something that mainly keeps the sun off your back as you enjoy a nice Palmdale summer evening? The possibilities are endless and it's best to have an idea in your mind before accepting offers from prospective general contractors.

Another great idea is to consult friends and books for creative ideas. Design ideas are plentiful and available to you if you look hard enough.

Think about the Mojave Desert weather conditions. The sun and wind can quickly destroy any untreated or improperly treated patio cover.
Think about the Santa Ana winds. Something durable will need to be built. You the consumer should be armed with this kind of research when engaging a contractor.

Once you have an mental picture in mind, contemplate budget. Decent patio covers can range anywhere from a couple thousand dollars on up depending on the complexity of the project, materials used and quality contractor involved.

The most important piece of advice that I can give is that a picture does speak a thousand words. If you can show a contractor an image of what you want, you’ll be fifteen steps ahead and closer to getting what you want.
Be it a snapshot of your neighbors patio or an image from the world wide web this will save you big time.
Now dedicate your time towards adjusting the details. No sense in burning time, trying to draw a mental model of what you desire and hoping the general contractor gets it. Knowing that the general contractor has a good idea of what you want brings good piece of mind. Also, you'll get more realistic estimates in return.

Always, get a second bid. Get three or four quotes if time allows for it. This is another important piece of information that often goes ignored.

I myself am guilty of wanting to get started quickly and with the least amount of hassle as possible. I did this with a recent move and I contacting one and only one moving company.

I was quoted everything over the phone, it all sounded great and I left it at that. When the time came to move, the dirt bags showed up to my home, loaded my goods, locked the truck moved it to my new home five minutes away and demanded twice the amount I was quoted.

Do not let this happen to you. Know your contractor and know the work they will accomplish for you. It's up to you to keep yourself from falling victim.

I hope this article offered some good advice and insight.
