Last week, we looked at cell forensic aquisition tools and why they are even priceless for local law enforement.. A serious occasion to finalize investigations is presented if you are collecting cell forensics from your suspects.

What was once a very tricky forensic task has become easier with the growth of push-button mobile forensics extraction devices. We will advocate several of these mobile forensic download devices - some that cost, but also many that are free.

If you desire to do something that is wearisome and time consuming, try the physical extraction approach to mobile phone analysis data. Training on the subject is tough to come by. In addition, the amount of customized hardware and tools required present challenges for even the most experienced professional technicians.

The physical approach to mobile forensics can work; we know this becaus detectives in the UK are disassembling the mobile phones themselves and extracting the data off of the mother boards. However, given the rapid advancements we see in the mobile phone forensics aquisition tools market, I would submit that the physical approach is no longer the most beneficial choice.

Automated Aquisition Tools (free)

Numerous sites offer free tools for detectives to use to accomplish mobile forensics. Many times, these tools are limited and focused a small set of telephones - but can be functional nonetheless. A tool that we suggest is Bitpim. By permitting you to view and extract information for analysis on many CDMA telephones from Samsung, LG, Sanyo, and others, Bitpim accomplishes the rudimentary mobile forensics extraction assignment quite well.

Another free tool focused on Blackberry devices can be located BlackBerry.com.The user can download the Blackberry Device Manager and back-up every Blackberry device. The back-up file is in a proprietary format (IPD) and extracts some very useful forensic data including call records, SMS, emails (including all content) and calendar events. An IPD file can be transformed to a useable format by means of an additional tool - ABC Amber Blackberry Converter. It is not free, but only costs $19.95 for the tool.

Automated Aquisition Tools (cost)

- The Cellebrite UFED (Universal Forensic Aquisition Device) automatically extracts and separates data from over 2,000 different mobile phones, which include GSM Phones (most global cariers and here in the US, AT&T), CDMA phones (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA cariers). In reality, that is 95% of the cell telephones out there. Their new UFED Physical Pro model also permits law enforcment to access deleted content.

- The XRY or XACT tool by Micro Systemation is another tool of not that is widely used accross the world. Touting support for almost 1000 phones together with the new Android, this mobile phone analysis tool is becoming a must for detectives.

- Susteen / Information Pilot's Secure View is a distinctive hand-held computer that allows the user to both pull out forensic information and run basic analysis
