Zippo Lighter Life And Death

You're on a camping trip in the middle of the sticks. You're trying to light a fire by scraping a knife on a flint rock, but it's just not working. The rain has been coming down hard all day, and you're soaked to the bone. Darkness is approaching, and you're going to have to wait out the cold night without fire. Don't you wish you had brought your Zippo lighter?

In 2001, I was camping on the outskirts of a small city in northern California, stuck in this same scenario. The only difference is that I was smart enough to have brought a backup plan - my Zippo lighter. The night air was at the most 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and it was dropping even lower with each icy breeze that passed through. It was unusually cold for Nor Cal. I wasn't prepared for such low temperatures. I didn't have a windbreaker or anything warm to sleep on. Without my Zippo lighter I couldn't have created a fire. I would have died

The moral of this story is to always be prepared. If you're going to do something dangerous, bring a backup plan. If you're going rock climbing; bring an extra rope. If you're going for a long drive; bring an extra tire. If you're going camping; bring a Zippo lighter. Sometimes, these simple objects can be used for much more than what they were originally intended to do.

For example: if I were stranded at sea with a Zippo lighter, I could use the chrome finish on it as a mirror to flag down other ships. Using a Zippo in ways it's not really 'meant' to be used can save your life. Since a Zippo lighter is nearly indestructible with a lifetime guarantee, you can safely assume that the misuse of your Zippo will not cause it any real harm. So long as you don't start seriously abusing it by doing something crazy, like smashing it between two rocks, it will probably be O.K.

Another great use for a Zippo lighter in a survival situation is to use it to ward off animals that might be seeking to harm you. A flame popping out of a Zippo lighter might not look scary to a human, but to a wild animal it probably looks more like a red hot ball of death spontaneously and angrily ripping it's way out of a steel cage. Things with fur don't like fire.

I once used my Zippo lighter to hunt for food. Certain edible animals like the look of shiny things, and will move closer to investigate. This can be taken advantage of by setting a trap, using the Zippo for bait. As the prey moves in to learn more about the Zippo, the trap is sprung and the animal is caught. This technique works particularly well when you don't have any food to bait the critters with.

The chrome Zippos also work great when you're alone in the woods without a mirror. Self grooming becomes infinitely easier once you can see what you're doing. After all, if you've been lost for a few months and you're finally getting ready to trek home, you wouldn't want to slink out of the forest looking like an unkempt hobo.

Although the Zippo is great for survival situations, my favorite use for the Zippo lighter has to be what it was intended for: lighting smokables. There's nothing I enjoy more than lighting up a smooth smoke with my favorite Zippo lighter. Everything seems to be enhanced with a Zippo. It makes you feel a little bit cooler when lighting up, and also looks fashionable.

The Zippo lighter has infinite uses. Beyond the fact that it creates fire, one of the most commonly used elements used in the modern world today, it can be made to do multiple other useful things as well. Not only can you light your favorite smoke in an elegantly simple way, but you can also save yourself in different wilderness situations. A Zippo lighter is the ultimate multi-tool.
