The impact of flooding can be trimmed with this dextrous programme

Strong storms and high winds often cause flooding, even in areas that are not prone to such an event. Since we seem to experience extreme weather conditions recently, those areas which were unflooded formerly could get a months worth of rainfall in a single day. Therefore, it is important that everyone knows how to react to an event such as a flood.

You may not receive fair warning of a flash flood, but you can certainly take preventive steps to protect your house from drastic damage.

Prevent water from entering your home.

If you are already aware of an expected storm or heavy downpour in your area, or if your house is located in a flood-prone area, you must act immediately, protecting your doors and windows using plywood and metal sheets and shielding them using sandbags. You can also use silicone sealant to ensure that water will not enter your home. Although having a short lifetime these materials are very effective in preventing short duration floods and keeping things dry.

Switch off any external services.

The main supply for water, electricity and gas should be shut down at once. Importantly, switching off the power running to appliances must not be forgotten. Storage on the second floor ensures that items can remain dry and far from the influence of water, as in most cases the water level will not reach the level of the upstairs floors inside homes.

Take special care of the appliances and furniture.

It is essential to safeguard your precious furniture and appliances by storing them upstairs or on elevated areas downstairs.
If space or storage does not permit, raise all these goods onto stacks of bricks, clear off the ground. Ensure removal of all curtains, carpets and internal doors as well.
When all these goods are stored at high locations, they stand a much better chance of weathering the incoming water.

All your office items like papers, pictures in addition to personal items must be stored on the second floor safely. If possible, put them into a waterproof container, maybe a food storage container. In case of non availability of waterproof containers use sealed plastic bags or refuse sacks to safeguard important documents against water.

Rakes and other objects that are outside your house also need proper attention. It can be dangerous for others if these articles get caught in floodwater easily. Any possessions that may be washed out by the storm must be kept in a lockable area like a garage. A heavy item like wheelbarrow can be very easily float if kept in the open but can be prevented from floating and damaged by floodwater if stored in the garage.

FThe following are the steps to be followed in case a flood warning is announced.

Correct information is vital in such circumstances.

So stay tuned to the radio for the latest news and warnings. Co-operation from your family with the local authorities and emergency services is essential. Once they ask you to relocate to some other place, do it without delay and save yourself and your family from any risks involved.

Since electricity will almost certainly be unavailable, you must ensure that you do all the things you need to do during the day. It will be tough and unsafe if you perform these things in the dark. Keep your torches and batteries handy.

Ensure that you share any information with your neighbours, particularly the elderly, so that they can properly prepare.

Be sure to stay inside your house. Floodwater can kill, especially when it is raging, so do not attempt to go out. You must be aware of the fact that rapidly flowing water above six inches can easily carry off an adult while above two feet can float away your car.

Make sure to find some safe place for your pets and your familys cars. As soon as you hear the flood warning announced move to the second floor. There maybe objects floating in the water, so do not attempt to swim through raging flood. These objects could knock you over or cause you to be carried away by the floodwater.

Floodwater may be dirty and contaminated with sewage, so you should avoid contact if possible. It would be a pitty to survive the flood but get sick due to exposure to contaminated water. River bridges, sea defenses, and riverbanks are very dangerous places to be in during floods, so be sure to steer away from them if possible. The defenses and bridges have often collapsed in the past due to the floodwater.
