If you have been looking for ways to bring back that glisten to your not-so-pearly whites, teeth whitening could be the answer.

Because they are likely not granting us the sparkle in our smile that we always planned on having, a number of us are not satisfied with our teeth's condition. There are many reason this happens such as stains from tea, red wine, or coffee, or you were born with bad teeth to begin with.

If you have yellowish or discolored teeth, you may have considered whitening as an option for brightening your smile. Teeth can also become discolored as your age progresses. But when your teeth are whiter, amazingly it makes you appear much younger.

If you're interested in trying a teeth whitening treatment, you'll need to contact a dentist to make an appointment. The dentist will make a cast of both your lower and your upper teeeth. These impressions will be sent to a laboratory.

A cast representing your teeth will be constructed from the models while they are at the dental laboratory. Using this cast, a tray is fabricated using a plastic material. The tray will be sent back to your dentist.

Your dentist will instruct you on how to use the kit, plus show you how to use the tray. The process is a simple one, dispensing the whitening gel from special syringes in the kit into the sections of the tray corresponding to the teeth you want brightened. You wear the trays during the night while sleeping.

Keep repeating this process until your teeth are as shiny and white as you desire. In general, patients see results literally overnight; but the treatments can continue from two to three weeks. There are cases, although rare, of patients with tetracycline discoloration or fleurosis which as a downside extends the treatment anywhere from two to six months.

It's recommended to wait at least two weeks after whitening, if you need to get any restorative work done, so the color has time to stabilize. In most cases, this treatment is a one off. There has been a lot of study done on how effective whitening is. Many patients are still happy with their tooth color years after their treatment.

Some people will have some degree of sensitivity in the beginning of, or at some point into, the treatment. The sensitivity is typically tolerable and will disappear once treatment ends. In these cases, however, the use of Sensodyne toothpaste has been found to be effective.

On top of visiting your dentist, there are other, over the counter treatments, you can purchase that are known to be safe. How good they are is another question. Patients may experience a very small erasure of stains and even a little bit of whitening, but these items won't help your teeth change drastically.

You should choose an at home kit with a mouth tray which molds to your teeth, or which has plastic strips. The downside is that both of these types of kits are very expensive, although they will likely yield a personalized fit.

Patients should steer away from any staining substances for the next two weeks after having their teeth treated. For the most part coffee, tea, cigarettes, and red white. You should contact your dentist if your gums become very irritated, if your teeth become very sensitive, or you experience extreme pain.
