When it comes to transmission troubles, the symptoms are typically very simple. In many instances, it won't allow you to shift gears. For a person with an automatic transmission, you won't be able to go above first or second gear and any attempt to mash the gas will just cause the engine to rev up. Likewise, it might allow you to shift gears, but not in the smoothest manner possible.

Grinding of the gears can often occur and the gears might stick as you try to move from one to the other. This is a less extreme symptom, but it is a sign of things to come. Because of the complicated nature of the transmission, the problems might arise from a number of different places. If fluid is low, the gears might not have the liquidity that they demand, causing them to grind.

If this happens for too long, they can be damaged irreparably. A fluid leak is a common problem, as well as a transmission filter being clogged. You will need to describe the sounds that you are hearing if you can. You will also need to let him know whether or not the fluid is a problem. By giving the mechanic as much information as possible, you can make sure that he understands how to effectively diagnose your problem and fix it quickly. Communication can go a long way to getting your vehicle back on the road again.
