Vegetables and fruits, which are loaded with fiber and vitamins and minerals, have been proven to be healthy for us and to prevent many types of diseases. Everyone is aware that the more we consume, the better, just as mother said, but no one really seems to care.

So, take a look at us now, swimming in hamburgers and french fry grease, chugging down a chocolate shake at lunchtime while making an attempt at steering the car with our only non-oily finger. All right, most of us don't consume fast food on a daily basis, but think about the times we just grab something that will fill us up quickly, such as a cookie, rather than grab a food that requires a bit of prep work, but is better for our bodies.

If it's simple you want, why not try some watermelon, grapes, or a cantaloupe? These things just need to be rinsed and then they are ready for us to enjoy. What about some quick veggies? Maybe a quick salad of chopped vegetables tossed in a light dressing. Research has shown that we don't eat enough of the low-calorie, wholesome broccoli and brussels sprouts, and so we are overweight and disease-prone. So to motivate people to develop healthier eating habits, we're being reminded of the Five-a-Day campaign to help us pay more attention to our diets and challenge us to have five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

At first, it seems unthinkable to eat five servings a day of these food types. Well, here are some ideas that can help you to accomplish this, beginning with fruit at breakfast. Add fruit to your morning oatmeal or muffins or yogurt. For later in the day when you crave a snack, take along a banana or apple to school or work.

It is very easy to add veggies to your daily diet. A tossed salad with a variety of chopped and sliced vegetables is a great idea. If you want a sandwich, order it with lettuce, tomatoes, and sprouts if you're eating out. Use vegetables in soups and stews and sauces for meats, and there are tasty baked goodies incorporating fruits and vegetables that are good for meal accompaniments or desserts.

Spread some peanut butter on pieces of celery for a simple snack - this is usually a favorite with the kids. Kids today never seem to like anything for more than one day, so try offering them a different healthy food everyday. The saying 'eat your vegetables before you get dessert' is a method that just seems to make vegetables more unappetizing. What do you think would happen to our society if everyone changed their eating habits and consumed the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables daily?

What if we offered broccoli as a reward for eating dessert? You can add juice to make sure you are getting a little bit more fruit. But, the drawback to juices is that they are not a good source of fiber. Children like to drink a lot of juice, which doesn't help when it comes to eating food. Juice can contain more calories.

There are numerous benefits to your health when you eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. It's getting harder and harder to pretend you don't know about them. Studies show that people who get plenty of vegetables and fruits reduce their chances by half of getting fourteen different kinds of adult cancers as compared to people who only eat one or two servings a day. The chances of getting a heart attack, a stroke, and adult blindness are also lower among those who eat plenty of vegetables and fruits.

We can make up excuses all day long, but the fact remains that we know we should eat more produce. Some people state that fresh fruits and vegetables are too costly while others say that they just do not have enough time to slice a strawberry. Others will simply concoct excuses such as, "As soon as I go to eat that peach (or banana or zucchini) it has gone bad."
