Who doesn’t like a tomato fresh from the garden? You can't get that sort of taste in the produce department. Perfectly ripened by the suns warm rays. No green tomatoes forced to ripen as they are taken off to the store. Picked at the peak of perfection and flavor, there is nothing better.

Anyone can grow the perfect tomato. It really isn’t hard at all. You just need a few ideas to get started. For the perfect tomato garden, just follow these simple hints and you will be on your way to enjoying a crop of delectable tomatoes!

Location Is important

Just like real estate, location is everything for perfect tomatoes. Tomatoes are sun lovers so an area that gets quite a bit of sunlight is perfect. Whether it is a sunny place in your yard, or a sunny corner of a deck – be sure that your sun worshiping tomatoes get lots of sunshine!

You don’t need a lot of space to grow tomatoes. You may discover you have enough room to plant a large crop of tomatoes that you can sell at a local farmers market. Tomatoes also grow well in containers so if you have a small yard they will thrive in a small space. Plant them in a pot that is well drained and gets lots of sun. Put a trellis or a stake in the pot so the plant doesn’t tip over.

What Kind

It is remarkable how many distinctive varieties of tomatoes there are available. It will be difficult to decide which kind is the best to plant. Your best choice is to go to see your local garden center and ask the professionals what kind of tomato grows best in your area. You typically don't have to be concerned because most tomatoes grow well anyplace, but it is good to have a professional opinion. It is a great idea to plant some small varieties of tomatoes as well. Small tomatoes are ideal for salads and just to eat fresh. Cherry tomatoes are great container plants and they also look great mixed in with your flowers. The small red fruit really looks striking planted around marigolds. Planting marigolds around your tomatoes helps to keep pests away!

How to Begin

Tomatoes need to be sheltered from frost so unless you plan to use hot caps, don't put them in the ground until you are sure frost risk is over. Once that danger has gone by, you can place tomato plants in the garden or containers. You can obtain tomato plants at most garden centers or you can start your own from seed indoors. Tomatoes do best if they are transplanted into the garden rather than seeded into the garden. If you decide to grow your own with seed, then start them indoors six to eight weeks before you will be transplanting them outdoors. Starting seeds indoors is easy. Just fill a growing tray with a soil mixture made specifically for starting seeds and carefully place the seeds into the soil. The soil needs to stay damp, but don't get it soggy. Think of a moist sponge, you know it is wet but you can’t see water standing on it. Within one to two weeks your seeds will begin to pop up. Keep the plants in a sunny window or under a grow light. Once the plants are big enough and the threat of frost is over, plant them in your garden.

Don't Let the Pests Get You!

Tomatoes can have a few bug problems. Hornworm is usually the culprit. Hornworms like to feed on underneath the leaves, so you will have to search carefully for them. When you come across one, make sure you kill it by stepping on it. Parasitic wasps can be introduced to your garden, they will lay their eggs on the worms and then the young larvae will eat the worm Check over your plants regularly to make sure you don’t get infested with the hornworm.

Some bugs can be avoided by just planting other plants next to your tomatoes. Possibly you have observed that people have one or two rows of marigolds in their gardens. It is unbelievable how nature provides it's own natural repellants.

Growing the perfect tomato isn't tough at all. Just follow this easy plan and relish your yummy crop!
