Women who work become mums, and mums eventually become working mums, either working for a company or becoming work at home mums. Many elements influence how much time mothers stay at home on a full-time basis to look after their kids and the family home. Financial worries and parental leave contracts are at the top of the reasons list for going back to work. Women return to work for an employer either full-time or part-time, usually before their children commence primary school. Many childcare centres promote that they care for infants and children from the age of 6 weeks. You read right, I said weeks, not months.

I definitely do not plan to instill culpability on women who send their children in daycare so that they can go back to work. Then again, for mothers going back to an employer without a true aspiration and inclination to do so will always make me feel disconcerted. It is depressing to witness that my generation, the one just before it, and the one following it too, is full of mothers who would love to remain home and mind their kids, but do something else, usually because of financial worries. Can’t we mums just be mums, be available, focused, relaxed, devoted and be the highest influence in our children’s lives? Appears naive, I know. But these are feelings that work at home mums have been sharing for a long time.

Work at home mums have grasped an opportunity to be home with their kids, whilst carrying out work around their family responsibilities and adding an income to the household. Who says it is not feasible to have the best of both worlds, being a full-time stay-at-home mum and working? The employer? The parental leave contract? The child care centre? The financial manager?

So for mums yet to get back to the working mass, what’s the other option to joining the work at home mums who have elected to be home-based with their family without sacrificing an income and benefiting from carrying out professional activities? The alternative to running a business at home is frequently to physically go to work for an employer, send your children to childcare, forfeit a big fraction of your income for childcare fees, see your children part-time and relinquish the personal control you could have around your family commitments if you were your own boss.

Whatever you choose to do for work, as a mum who needs to work and make an income, consider your options. Neither road is a walk in the park. Work at home mums experience several challenges. Mothers who work for others do too. The distinction may be in the consequences and outcomes you will generate for yourself, your kids and your loved ones, in terms of income, lifestyle, flexibility and your sense of accomplishment. So ask yourself: What is the alternative?
