With Radiator Cabinets There's No Need To Nail Your Furniture To The Ceiling

Unless radiator cabinets or radiator covers are already in your home, you can probably picture the following scenario quite clearly. You walk into your home after being away for a while, switch on the heating and sit shivering for ages. After what seems like hours you tentatively place your hand on the radiator to see whether it really is on, since the room doesn't feel any warmer. Thoughts of a broken boiler flash through your mind. As you snatch your burning hand away from the radiator you are reassured that the heating really is on, yet you continue to sit shivering with cold.

For all the benefits of radiators and central heating, it is very surprising just how inefficient they often are without radiator cabinets or radiator covers. Whilst you sit cold and uncomfortable, your boiler is pounding away heating up gallons of water, furiously pumping it through your radiators, and of course adding more numbers to your already bulging fuel bill.

Yet invariably we do little about it, and accept the lengthy delay during which we are wasting money and energy until we finally detect a slow rise in warmth. You may well ask yourself where all that heat being generated is going? The answer is that although you and your family may be cold, your room is cold, your floors, walls and chairs are all cold, the good news is that you have beautifully warm ceilings.

That's right, the heat from your radiators for which you are paying an extortionate sum of money is almost entirely directed towards your ceilings. This is because hot air rises, so your radiators are heating the air above them, which rises towards your ceiling. Only when that warm air starts to cool does it sink back down into the middle of the room. After a while the air begins to circulate, and the average ambient temperature slowly starts to rise. But depending on the size of your room and the size of your radiator, this can take a very long time to achieve.

You therefore have two choices if you wish to save money, save energy and enjoy the warmth sooner. Your first choice is to move all of your furniture off the floor and nail it all to the ceiling. By clinging on to your armchair hanging from the ceiling there's a chance you might well feel the warmth a lot sooner than waiting for it on the floor. However, this is hardly ideal, and makes drinking hot cups of tea very difficult.

The second alternative is to instal radiator cabinets in your home. Many people tend to assume that radiator cabinets and radiator covers are simply a form of interior decoration, a way of hiding or disguising those fairly unattractive steel radiators which dominate rooms. Although this is perfectly true, and an entirely valid reason for choosing radiator cabinets, with the weather becoming increasingly colder, fuel bills become increasingly larger, and the need for warmth much more immediate, it makes good sense to consider the practical benefits of having a radiator cabinet installed.

Radiator cabinets work in a number of ways, all of which combine to significantly improve the efficiency of your radiator. Many people have noticed that fuel bills have dropped considerably after having a cabinet or radiator cover installed because the heating has only needed to be on for short periods of time, and at lower settings.

Above the cabinet is a shelf which traps the heat that would otherwise have escaped to your ceiling. This shelf not only serves a practical purpose, but also provides space for ornaments and pictures, entirely protected from the heat just a couple of inches below.

At the base of the radiator cabinet is a gap, and this is where cool air is drawn in. Inside the cabinet the air is very quickly heated by the radiator, and is then pushed out through the grille at the front, directly in to the centre of your room, where it's most needed and most felt.

By changing the flow and direction of the warm air, people with radiator cabinets notice that the heat is detectable within minutes of the heating being switched on, and can start to feel warm long before those without cabinets have begun jumping up and down, putting on a fourth jumper and wondering whether the boiler has packed up.

With radiator cabinets available in a wide range of styles, designs and finishes, there is certain to be a combination that will look perfect within your home, matching your existing decor, and complimenting it. Custom made radiator cabinets will be designed to fit your radiator exactly, ensuring a beautiful fit. Of course, you may choose to simply hang from the ceiling instead but that's a personal choice.
