The word decking refers to the floor of a ship, and in fact many of the woods originally used for outdoor decking were the same as those used in shipbuilding. Teak, and mahogany are examples of tropical woods that were used extensively in shipbuilding, and the all-weather qualities of these woods lend themselves well to the use as outdoor decking. The cost of such exotic woods and their relative scarcity means that, for most people, a cheaper alternative must be found.

White cedar, red cedar, and redwood were once the decking material of choice. These woods were obtained from the logging of old growth forests and were extremely durable as well as beautiful. Even today, western red cedar is considered the very best material for high end decking.

Of course, there are only so many old growth forests to be logged, and as the scarcity of the old growth softwoods led to increased prices and decreased availability, pressure treated woods such as pine became the favorite decking material. Pressure treated woods hold up very well in all weather conditions, is long lasting, and very durable. For some, there is no substitute for the soft color and texture of wood decking, and for those discerning folks pressure treated wood is the very best material for decking.

Just as technology has affected every other aspect modern life it has led to a multitude of new choices in decking materials. Traditional woods have, in some instances, been replaced by composite materials. Some modern decks are built completely of recycled plastic material without even a scrap of traditional wood. Such decking is durable and impervious to the detrimental effects of weather or rot. Not even a carpenter bee will drill his way into a deck composed of high-density polyethylene.

Decking not only comes in a staggering variety of materials, but it is common to see decking built in shapes that meld with the landscaping and style of home they are built around until they become as much for decoration as for function.

The old standard square deck of wood butted up against the back of the house is still quite common. It's also common to find a modern deck, built of recycled plastic decking, designed with multiple levels, and incorporating an above the ground pool, built in seating, and even perhaps an integral barbecue grill.

No matter whether the decking is of teak, or recycled plastic bottles, or western red cedar, for hundreds of homeowners their deck is almost treated as an extra room. When the warm breezes of a summer evening stir across the lawn bring the scent of new mown grass and dinner sizzling on the barbecue, there's no better place to be than lounging on your own little piece of paradise, your deck.
