The only forms of gambling that I enjoy are horse racing and cards. That's probably because they are both social and your input and skills will reflect your results. Horse racing has the added bonus of the colour, noise and spectacle when viewed at the track that can turn even a poor day's betting into a memorable event. Even watching it on TV with friends at what ever venue you wish makes for a good day out. For years I relied on pure instinct or a tip when placing my bets. The results where at best mixed however things have improved a little since then.

When it comes to betting on the horses I have been a little bit controlled probable because when I was very young I watched a good friend of mine loose everything house, family, the lot. Since then I have only played with what I could afford to lose. That is not to say that I wanted to lose anything. But I inevitably did.

Over the years friends and I discussed ways to improve our chances. One friend went so far as to buy a system that was mailed in a circular. Strangely enough it was not as bad a purchase as it may seem. Because initially at least it actually worked and he probably made his money back. Inevitably however the law of averages turned against it and it started to fail as they always do. However we did feel that there was something that could be saved from it and this turned out to be correct.

One of the things that it did tell us is that in just about every race there are horses cannot win. That is not to say that they will never win we have all heard the stories of the hundred to one shot coming in. It's just that they are really not supposed to. If we can find out which ones they are we can improve our odds enormously as the race will probable be down to just three or four horses. How do you find out? Well if you're not the sort of person who spends hours buried in a form guide. Check what the local media tipsters are saying; I am not talking about picking one, you need at least five or six then find out what the majority say.

I use a scoring system that allocates a number directly in relation to place the tipster gave the horse. The horses with the highest numbers overall are the favourites, the lowest disregard. This worked for me for a while and while I did not make a lot of money I didn't lose any and had a great deal of fun. The weakness with this system is that it takes a while to get a pool of good tipsters. But take your time find people who know their racing. After all it's how they make their living and you could do well.
