Finding residential windows and doors in Toronto is not difficult. There’s lots of competition among various windows and doors suppliers and retailers. It’s a good situation for Toronto homeowners because it means lots of selection and better prices.

But, lots of choice and good prices doesn’t mean it’s easy for homeowners to find the right windows and doors in Toronto. Too often, homeowners shop on price alone and don’t really sit down and think about which windows and doors would work best for them. Part of the problem is that windows and doors are a significant investment in your home and the final price tag can make you think twice about the purchase.

However, saving a few dollars rarely pays off in the end. Indeed, cheaper windows and doors may be your most expensive option.

New windows and doors beautify a home and, in a competitive Toronto real estate market, the enhancement to the home can mean a higher selling price. If you are not selling your home, you might think there’s no real payoff beyond the good looks. Less expensive windows and doors look good too, so why spend the extra money if you will not get a return on your investment.

It’s a false perception. There a number of bottom line, “in your pocket” benefits to replacing the doors and windows in your Toronto home. Energy savings alone can mean there is a foreseeable payback for your investment. As much as 50% of the energy loss in your home can be through your windows, especially in older homes. New windows feature tighter seals, better installation, thicker glass, double and triple panes, gas-filled, etc.. Each of these features is designed to better insulate your home from the heat and cold outside. But lower energy costs are not the only economic benefit of better insulation. By keeping expensive heated and cooled air in your home, new windows and doors mean your furnace and air conditioner have less work to do. Less work means fewer costly repairs and a longer time until you need to replace the equipment.

Saving energy helps others, including the government, who then have to spend less money cleaning up the environment and paying hospital bills for people who get sick from pollution. So much so that the government has introduced grant programs that will help you pay for new doors and windows. A federal home renovation tax credit is also now available.

Replacement doors do not generate the same concern about energy savings as windows simply because there are far more windows than doors in homes. But your entrance doors can be just as guilty of poor insulation as any window.

It’s these cost savings that are eroded if you purchase less expensive windows and doors. It’s a classic case of “less is more”. Less cost means less insulation, which means more spent on energy and more spent on heating and air conditioning equipment. Not to mention that your windows and doors will probably need more repairs and to be replaced sooner.

When you start to weigh all the costs, you realize that, although there’s a wide selection of windows and doors in Toronto, it’s not as easy a choice as it first seems.

To make the problem worse, just because less expensive windows and doors might not be the best value, it does not mean that the most expensive are the best ones either. If you find high prices without a corresponding boost in insulating capacity, then you are probably not getting good value for your money.

To find the right windows and doors in Toronto, you also need to determine what features you like, including colours, secure locking mechanisms and easy clean features.

While it may not be easy, one thing is for sure, when you enjoy the new windows and doors for your Toronto home, you will be very glad you took the time to find the right ones.
