The windows and doors in Toronto homes have a lot of work to do. In winter, your windows and doors keep your home warm and in summer, they keep it cool. But insulating your home from the elements isn’t the only thing that keep you windows and doors in almost constant use. With relatively short Toronto summers, many homeowners want to open up their houses when the weather is good and let in some fresh air. This means their windows and doors not only need to provide great insulation from the heat and cold of Toronto’s climate, but they need to quickly and easily do the exact opposite and let in as much of Toronto’s good weather as possible.

As a Toronto homeowner, your challenge is to find windows and doors that insulate your home well, but can also allow a lot if air flow when you want it. If you just needed good insulation without too much concern for opening windows and doors to letting in air, you would choose well-sealed windows and storm doors that had small openings. If fresh air was your priority, there are many window and door options that let you open up large spaces; however, every opening is a potential leak and, especially during those cold Toronto winters, a potential source of energy loss. If you’re like most Toronto homeowners, you want something in between and fortunately, if you know what to look for, you can find it.

Starting with your windows, the first thing you should look for is good insulating capacity. No matter how much you want to let in air in the summer, you need to keep cold air out in those nasty Toronto winters so your home remains warm and dry. While your walls and ceiling use insulation to stop heat from passing through, your windows have only glass. It means you need to find windows with glass that provides good insulation. Unfortunately, while some types of glass are better than others, insulating is not something that any type of glass does well. Insulation means stopping the transfer of heat and the composition of glass and its thickness mean that heat can pass through relatively easily. Toronto winters are probably why double and triple-paned windows were developed. By adding extra panes of glass the insulation properties of your windows are improved in two major ways. First, just by having another layer of glass, heat will have a harder time passing through your window. But the second improvement to your window’s ability to insulate is even better. By adding the second pane of glass, a third layer of insulation, the air between the glass, is automatically added. A second pane of glass creates three layers of insulation which combine to give far better insulation than two single layers of glass.

Even better window insulation can be had by choosing double-paned windows filled with gas between the panes. The gas-filled windows insulate your home better than those filled with plain air.

But what about Toronto summers and more fresh air when you need it. Newer replacement windows are able to provide larger openings to let in air for a number of reasons. Window openings can be sealed much better than with previous technologies. Also, closing and locking mechanisms are designed to seal openings tighter to prevent heat transfer.

Most main doors to your home are not able to open up and allow in extra air, which makes them better at insulating in the winter. To get more enjoyment from Toronto summers, while still getting good insulation in winter, you need to find the right storm door. Many Toronto window and door suppliers offer storm doors that have high insulating glass, but can open half their surface area to let in more air.

But letting you enjoy Toronto’s variety of weather more is not the only work done by your windows and doors. They also have to keep your home secure and quiet. Fortunately, you have the option of advancements in “no forced entry” locking mechanisms to keep your home safe. Better insulating capacity and seals in your windows and doors also keep out the big city noise that Toronto has to offer.
