Will Swimsuit Season Kill You?

Summertime is here. Time for picnics, barbeques and swimming pools. While the warm summer months mean sun and relaxation for many, for those with a few extra unwanted pounds the season can be the source of a lot of anxiety and embarrassment.
Being overweight is a source of year-round stress, but never is that stress higher than during the summertime. By the time that May rolls around most of us are already 14-18 weeks past having given up on our New Year's resolution to lose weight. The goal of obtaining a healthier weight has be relegated to the status of "to-do... later" and most of us don't give another thought to weight loss until we unpack the swimsuits for the first time.
Of course, by May it is already too late to take healthy action. Slowly changing our habits, developing healthier eating patterns and easing into a regular exercise routine takes time. Losing weight healthily takes months. If you wait until a week before your first pool party or trip to the beach then there just isn't enough time.
That is why so many people attempt to crash diet in the last few weeks of May and early June, in a desperate bid to fit into last year's swimsuit (or, for some, last decade's). Fad deprivation diets, fasts, body cleanses and yo-yo diets seem to give the kind of immediate results that we are looking for, but do they really work? More importantly, are they safe?
Deep down, most of us already know the answer to those questions. Crash dieting does not really work. They appear to give rapid results by shedding pounds of water weight at first. Very little actual body fat is lost (no more so than by healthy diet and exercise routines). Even worse, this type of dieting can have some very negative long-term ramification for your overall health and wellbeing.
Detox regimens and crash diets strip the body of much needed vitamin and minerals and leaves your immune system compromised. Do it often enough, the aptly named yo-yo method of dieting, and the repetitive expansion and contraction can damage your blood vessels and capillaries. Over time this can lead to heart disease and even a heart attack.
The fact of the matter is, crash dieting doesn't make you healthier. It doesn't even really help you lose weight permanently. When you significantly reduce your caloric intake you shut down your metabolism. When you stop dieting and resume normal eating you will gain the weight back even fast than you put it on the first time.
This doesn't mean that there aren't ways to lose weight quickly and effectively, as long as you have realistic expectations. However, no one should ever attempt a significant weight loss effort without talking to their doctor first. Not only can your doctor help to ensure that you lose weight healthily, he or she can even assist you with effective and safe dietary aids to help facilitate faster weight loss.
However, you cannot expect to be ready for swimsuit season if you wait until June 1st to get started. Safe, healthy weight loss takes time, even with pharmacological aides. Don't put off weight loss until later and don't wait until your first trip to the beach to get started. Talk to your doctor about starting a healthy weight loss program now.
