There are a few things that can contribute to thinning hair, these are are; pollution, a poor diet,stress and adverse reactions to medication,which can make hair thin besides normal MPB (Male Pattern Baldness)
These can include a poorly balanced diet, a bad reaction to medication, and stress can all play a role to thinning hair.

However, it is estimated that Dht is the main cause of thinning hair and hair loss in men, resulting in Male Pattern Baldness or MPB.
Dht is an byproduct of testosterone and it is an enzyme.
Dht makes the follicle of the hair grow weaker and weaker as Dht continually attacks it.

There are only two medically proven treatments that can help fight thinning hair and hairloss in men.

These are Finasteride and Minoxidil
Minoxidil has been shown to increase the flow of blood to the hair follice, thus improving growth.

The level of Dht in the body is reduced by Finasteride, which inhibits it.
Both have been proven to have some success in slowing down and even stopping hair loss and in some cases even leading to improved hair quality and increased thickness

Some people might consider the use of hairpieces, the most convincing ones use synthetic hair that blends perfectly with your own hair perfectly so the only thing that can be seen is a seamless match with your own hair, upon parting the scalp will even be visible.

You will be able to do everything with a hair system that you could with a full head of naturally growing hair such as swimming, running, hiking etc...
The downside to systems is the expense involved, as systems usually only last for a couple of years and involve a maintenance fee that is paid monthly.This is to clean sweat, new hair growth, dirt, dead hair cells etc.. that accumulate under the system, which could potentially cause discomfort or make the system come loose.

Systems are usually held on with some type of adhesive glue and are glued to a shaven, bald scalp. Alternatively some systems use clips to attach themselves, usually via stronger hair.

Hair thickener products are also able to completely thicken thinning hair at at a much cheaper cost than hair systems.

The result is often a complete enhancement (cosmetically) to the thinning hair. Of course this depends on how much hair there is to thicken and the quality of the existing hair.

It should be noted that hair thickeners won't result in any more or better quality hair growing as they are merely cosmetic.
The results can be compared to that which takes place when mascara is applied to the eye lashes, but with hair thickeners that result will obviously be applied to the hair.
Hair being shaved clean off might be an option also.
