One of the hardest things in life is to find and keep a good marriage. All it takes is a look at the current divorce rate in America to see why. Despite these facts, marriage remains a foundational structure of the culture. So why do marriages go bad? Maybe you think there are some ways to recognize marriage trouble before it causes a divorce or separation. If you want to know more, you should take a look at some of the following warning signs.

One of the basic signs of marriage trouble is that there's no intimacy in your relationship. It is more than just sexual intimacy that is suffering. It is the type of intimacy that leads you to do special things for your spouse that express love and appreciation for them. It may be fixing them coffee each morning or telling them that you love them. This doesn't exclude simple affection from the list. Without intimacy, it is possible that your relationship may be endangered.

Just behind intimacy, a marriage in trouble may involve a lack of respect for one another. Healthy respect is an integral part of any marriage. If you don't have respect, then you've taken away something that is vital to your happiness.

Without intimacy or respect, you may begin feeling that spending time with your spouse is an ordeal or at the very least, uncomfortable. When you do interact, it can seem oppressive or suffocating. Your marriage trouble is definitely worsening.

Arguing is just a normal part of most marriages. Should this pattern of disagreements stop, then there is chance one or the other spouse have quit on the relationship. At the very least, it's a reasonable assumption. The occasional arguments that happened before you worked through it to find a compromise or a solution are no longer occurring.

When you reach the point when you have stopped talking to your spouse all together, then you've reached a critical point in your marriage trouble. This is because communication is the essence of your marriage. Once the talking stops, your marriage is probably over in most cases. There is little reason to doubt it now. When you cannot even talk to your spouse about your feelings, you may start assuming things. You may see things that don't exist. It is not uncommon for feelings of annoyance, resentment, and anger to overwhelm you.

The most obvious sign of marriage trouble is romantic or sexual interaction with someone other than your spouse. All of the other signs can lead to this conclusion. Spouses have an affair because they've been neglected, ignored, and undervalued by the other. The cheating spouse is often desperate to find the intimacy, respect, companionship, and communication that their spouse has denied them. While affairs may vary in complexity or extent depending on the person, it should be understandable what causes contributed.

The bottom line is that when you recognize the signs, you need to act swiftly to protect your marriage by building it on love and the qualities mentioned above. This is what you must do if you wish to keep trouble out of your marriage.
