Why Noel Devine Can Win The Heisman

West Virginia RB Noel Devine decided to wait on entering in the most recent NFL Draft to return to the team for his senior season. While Devine may have come back to try and help the team win the National Championship, it is very possible that he returned for some individual accolades. Devine is currently the fifth leading rusher in the school’s history, and he could possibly finish the season a top that list. And then, of course, there is the Heisman Trophy, the greatest individual accolade in all of college sports. Devine is a leading candidate for the award.

Devine is looking to become the first West Virginia player to win the prestigious award. He would have to run for about 1800 yards to break the school’s record, and a statistical season as such, combined with say 15-20 touchdowns would definitely make him a front runner for the Heisman. Of course, all is for naught if West Virginia takes a step back and can not put together a winning season, but I don’t foresee that happening.

Last season Divine averaged 112 yards per game. Obviously, to hit the benchmark’s he needs to achieve he is going to need to up the ante a bit do reach those goals. However, Divine is going to be sole focus of the offense, and could easily touch the ball 30-35 times per game. Also, Divine is not going to be doing this alone. Last season the West Virginia offensive line was not a group that had much experience playing together, and Divine was still able to impress. The group remains intact, so it is not far fetched to say that the group will improve, springing more holes for Divine to break through. Once Divine reaches the second level, it’s game over, as he is the best in college football at making people miss and breaking off the long TD runs.

Divine did come back to the team to win, stating that he had unfinished business to take care of. I truly do not believe he would have returned if he didn’t truly think he could break the West Virginia rushing record, or win the Heisman. While it does seem selfish to return solely for those reasons, a motivated Divine, striving for those goals is only going to benefit the team. Divine may be a smaller back, but he has the heart and the talent to get things done. I would not be surprised if Divine walks away with both the record and the trophy. Time will tell.
