Why Don't We Stimulate Environmental Protection?

How many jobs are too many? That's the question that everyone is asking as we try to save the economy by injecting funds into the car manufactures.

Are they missing the point?

It's not a big surprise that the North American method of transportation (that is, the private automobile) is extremely detrimental to our environment. For a long time governments have been struggling to motivate people to use municipal transportation. The results from their efforts have been almost non-existent.

Here's the two main causes why I believe this is:

Ease of Use: Public transportation is not as handy as a personal car. With Public transit I have to fine-tune my plan to match that of the transit system. I do not have the choice to travel as easily as in an automobile. Additionally, a expedition on Public transit often requires more time than in an automobile.

Image: For the most part, the auto manufactures are not marketing transportation solutions. That may seem wrong, but if you watch their promotions carefully you'll discover that they're marketing an image. Almost none of the advertisements show how a vehicle can transport you. They are about how the vehicle will make you feel and how your family will admire you.

It is clear that we have to make some changes in our society for our natural surroundings. We are trying to get people to make different choices by advocating Public transit. We are currently faced with an opportunity the automobile manufactures are deteriorating. We could take advantage, but we just do not have courage to make the changes.

We justify that we can't allow people to lose their jobs or their investments so we fund an environmentally damaging method of transportation because of political expediency. Keep in mind that any government that allows that many people to become unemployed would definitely lose the next election.

But as usually is the circumstances, it does not have to be a one side or the other attitudeŚ we can make compromises, change our approach, and make improvements for both the economy and the environment.

What if the financial aid that is being injected into the ailing automobile sector was instead planned for public transportation projects? What if we improved public transit so that it did become convenient and comfortable? What if we aided the automobile manufactures' workers apply their current skill sets to building, selling, running, and maintaining public transportation?

What if we used the companies that build cars and parts to make public transit beneficial rather than supporting them so they can promote their products just for an appearance?

We have a chance for a difference here. Why are we continuing to force life into an industry that harms the natural surroundings and is turning out to be economically impractical? I would suggest it is because of politics but politics never protected the environment.
