While most small and mid – sized businesses are not opting to accept credit card payments from their customers, the first thing they need to do is to establish a merchant account. The merchant account is a contract between the retailer and the processing bank in order to process all the credit card payments that take place at the retailer end.

This type of account need special attention when setting it up because it contains many details that the retailer need to consider before signing up with a credit card processor company. The only thing to mention is that without this account you cannot deal with customers willing to pay with their credit cards.

Payments with credit cards need some setup and even though the merchant account is an important item but it is not the only item you will need to start dealing with credit cards. You will also need a method to acquire the credit card information. There are different types of terminal credit card machines; the first type is the manual one where you have to manulay put the card and pass the machine to get the information printed on the slip. The second type is the electronic one where you have to swipe the card through the machine and it will read the information printed on the magnetic stripe at the back of the card.

The main issue that you need to deal with is that every different “information reading” method incurs a different fee. For example if you keyed in the information, the fees differ from swiping the card and also from using manual machine.

While you are choosing your proper merchant account, it is very wise to read the different rates associated with each transaction you carry out through the system. Sometimes the statement you get at the end of the month is misleading so, it is hard to know the fees through the monthly statement and it is much better to know what you are going to pay upfront.

Some merchant accounts require a minimum monthly fee so; there are some steps that the merchant needs to do before signing for a large monthly fee. First, you should know how many customers are willing to use their credit cards at your store. This will give you a rough idea about the number of transactions you will do per month. Of course the number can vary from month to another but you will have an average. If you are not sure about the number of customers then you need to go with the least monthly fee you can find.

After that, you need to know the fees incurred with every transaction like per item fees, transaction fees and authorization fees. Knowing these fees will give you an idea about how much you will be paying every month. If the result was still lower than the monthly fees then you should look for a credit card processor with a lower monthly plan or you will end up with paying money without getting any profits.
