Candidiasis is caused by microscopic fungi or yeast which live naturally on our skin
and in the large intestine.
Yeast are forms of candida, the most common being candida albicans. There is no
problem until the candida become so numerous that they cause infection. Some studies show that 80-90% of people living in the United States have a yeast infection. This probably applies to other countries as well.
The most common of yeast infections is a vaginal one, which usually is experienced as having white discharge accompanied by irritation, pain, and red inflammation.
A yeast infection does not discriminate as it can effect people of both sexes and of all ages. A penile yeast infection can occur in men.
Babies' diaper rash is often a yeast infection.
Yeast infections can be found anywhere on the body in the form of a skin rash in both sexes of all ages. The candida infection is an infection of the mouth, tongue and throat. Often known as "thrush," the infection manifests itself as a white, curd-like substance.
Infections often also occur in moist warm areas such as underarms, in skin folds and under breasts.
The nail beds are another location where it can manifest.
Unfortunately, candidiasis is often misdiagnosed. Not only is it sad but it can potentially be harmful. If unattended, the yeast infection spreads across the whole body, irrespective of the parts involved. Then it can become a chronic or systemic infection. Systemic yeast infections occur most frequently in women with weak immune
systems.
There is a host of less obviously-related symptoms that comes along with a yeast infection.
