The reiki attunememts are very beautiful and powerful initiation.
They are delivered by a Reiki Master to the student so as to "Attune" the student to Reiki.
In the dictionary attune is defined like this:
to bring into accord, harmony, or sympathetic relationship.
And that is what the reiki attunements do, they bring the student into harmony with reiki. You could say the student becomes aware of and and connected to reiki.
Attunements to reiki are very subtle, and the power to heal ourselves and others is with us all of the time once we see it.
Must of us do not see it. It's a bit like the saying....I cant see the wood for the trees......but as soon as we are asked to look, we see it..
One of the purposes of the attunement is to point out different aspects and layers of life to the student. These things were already there but the attunement helps the student to see them.
Attunement to reiki can be performed in person, with the master and student in the same room and they can also be carried out at a distance. This is not unlike distance healing. Either way the student is brought into harmony and made aware of the source of reiki.
Once the attunement is done the student then begins a number of self healing sessions to become more familiar with reiki and learn how to use it.
Reiki attunements are carried out in three stages.

Your initial attunement will mark your initial connection to Reiki and you will gain the ability to carry out Self healing and to treat others with reiki.
The reiki one attunement is part of the reiki one training course.
When the attunement has been carried out the student is asked to start self healing sessions for the next twenty one days, this brings about focus and allows you to become very familiar with reiki. One can also start giving reiki treatments to others during this time.
The power symbol is also introduced at this point, it is a good idea to do that as it gives the student at ability to include the use of symbols in their self healing.
Your Reiki 2 attunement expands the use of reiki with 2 more of the 4 Reiki symbols and attunes you to the use of them in your self healing and treatments.
The introduction and use of the Reiki Symbols increases the power of the Reiki at this level you will also learn how to address mental and emotional issues and also to heal at a distance.
By this time the student is used to giving treatments and doing self healing.

Each subsequent attunement will will boost you awareness of reiki and add a greater depth and breadth to your understanding of it.
The third attunement is that of reiki master and at this level the student is also introduced to the master symbol.
Once this level has been achieved the student should continue with a 21 day period of self healing and start giving regular treatments to others.
Training to the level of reiki master allows you to attune others and also serves to boost and clarify your own use and understanding of Reiki.
