There is so much information on Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, on the web that I thought I must add my 2 cents worth as well. There are lots of blogs on the complicated details of Search Engine Optimisation and the in's and out's of optimising a website to rank on Google but understandably, business owners don't really need to know all that.

Normally, if I refer to a search engine I am talking about Google as it is the numero uno search engine, in my eyes. The same principles apply to all the other search engines and if you can get your website ranking on Google, you will rank on the others. Other search engines include Yahoo! Search, Live Search, Alta Vista, AOL Search.

Simply put, SEO is marketing through an understanding of how search engine algorithms work, combined with a knowledge of what human users might search for. The end goal is to create a site that contains words for which people will likely search when looking for information such as that contained on your site.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the term given to the process of optimising a website to rank well in search engines. There are many different aspects that contribute to a website ranking well and the main aspects are the way the website is built, the text content and the number of incoming links. The number of incoming links is probably the main contributor to a website search engine ranking. The more quality links you get, the higher Google rates your website. Incoming links from quality sites related to your websites content are best, Google also gives preference to links from government sites.

Most of the time if your just starting a business or your website is new, you won't have the rankings or the links coming into your website that Google uses to give your website a ranking. Never fear, there are ways to help Google find, read and remember your website. Any SEO expert should be able to secure effective backlinks, optimise your website to include Google friendly tags and optimise your content for the relevent search phrases you want to rank for.

Search phrases or keyword are what determine how hard it will be to achieve a top result. If you want to optimise a website for "pink and black polka dot fur coat", it will be pretty easy as there wont be many results for that phrase and not much competition. However, if you want to rank for a term such as "web design", it will be extremely hard as there are hundreds of millions of results and they are all competing for a top search engine ranking.

By no means is SEO an easy skill and it takes a lot of time and effort to achieve top search engine results. Search engine optimisers and Web design studios should keep up-to-date with web standards and incorporate as many Google friendly SEO factors into their design process as they can.
