When a technical product group has matured, it’s crucial for a smart manufacturer to consolidate its key features to acquire larger acceptance of the technology. In the past couple of years smartphone technology has evolved at a tremendous pace and smartphone manufacturers, along with the smarter ones in Shenzhen, are incessantly incorporating new features into their latest brands.
Although the proliferation of 3G services is yet to begin in India, smartphones have already made headway in different cities. Thanks to shanzhai manufacturers, the lower ends of the economic pyramid are also getting the ‘smart’ experience at a reasonable price.

To capture the emerging lucrative market in India, branded manufacturers have already showcased latest models like the Blackberry Tour series and iPhone 3GS. However, consumers in this part of the world are always finicky about embracing new technology like smartphones and choosing the correct one depends upon local and individual needs.

In a country like India where a single penny can determine the buying and selling of a product, smartphones are no exception. Keeping aside the pricing aspect, otherwise an important factor, Indian consumers also expect a host of applications and services with their smartphones.

Speaking with a diverse section of people in India, Shanzhai.com made some interesting observations. Common to most wish lists is a long battery life. Some even suggested that manufacturers should come up with smartphones which can offer a dual battery slot. This demand for excellent battery life or dual battery slots in smartphones should not be unexpected because some parts of India, especially the northern regions, are often plagued by power crises. Power shortage is not only confined to cities, it is also a perennial problem in the majority of villages in India. Although smartphones are yet to make their presence felt among small town and village users, smartphone manufacturers should take the battery longevity factor into account while designing smartphones for Indian customers.

An Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) employee in Bangalore, who is planning to buy a smartphone, expects better browsing experience with a higher mega-pixel camera. He wants to view web pages in the same way he views them on computers. Quick browsing with quality results also depends upon network platforms like 3G, something which won’t be available right across India for some time. A call center agent who has already got a smartphone wants HDMI output in a future smartphone, which will enable him to watch high definition video clips.

In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in India, where terrorists were found to be using smartphones, some people have also highlighted security concerns. Some have suggested there should be built-in identity software in smartphones that should have a person’s national identity credentials. So every time a person tries to operate any feature of a smartphone, their action will be tracked live to the GSM & CDMA operator’s network. This, they argue, may prevent smartphones from being used by terrorists again. The Indian government has already banned cell phones which do not have a proper International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. According to the Times of India, international cyber criminals were found to be sending MMS to smartphone users to intercept and retrieve private information.

Although consumers are always wary about handling expensive devices like smartphones, people in India want smartphones to endure rough handling. A sturdy smartphone is especially applicable in a country like India, where dust, smoke and moisture rule the roost. A few years back when cell phones started to spawn across rural India, Nokia came out with a model that can withstand dust and shock. That model became an instant hit in the country. Smartphone manufacturers should remember that.
