If the coin toss had gone the other way this beautiful city near the Pacific Coast of Oregon would be called Boston, rather than Portland Oregon. How exactly did that happen? Well, back in the 1840s the original two developers of the area each wanted to name the new town they founded after their respective home town. Asa Lovejoy was from Boston, and Francis Pettygrove was from Portland, Maine.

The name was chosen by a coin toss, which Pettygrove won. Actually he won two out of three tosses, just to make it as fair and square as possible. The coin they used is in the headquarters of the Oregon Historical Society and today is called the Portland Penny.

Portland was built on the Willamette River with excellent access to both the Pacific Ocean and the interior of the state. By 1851 the population of Portland was about 800. The area has grown a bit since then: by the year 2006 the population of the Portland metro area was just about 2 million.

If you have hockey players in the family, the driveway is the perfect spot to set up a goal net, complete with a dummy goalie and targets in the corners. Naturally your garage door is going to serve as backup and take a huge beating just as the boards at an arena do.
