What distinguishes Turbocharger from Supercharger

Despite the fact that turbochargers and superchargers fulfill the same objective, there are some basic differences between the two. The key difference between the supercharger and a turbocharger could be that the former is actually belt driven, while the latter is exhaust influenced.

From an estimate, a standard turbo or supercharger process can boost the power of your car engine by around 50%. This means, a 300hp engine will gain near 150hp with an efficient system to a total 450hp. A supercharger is better used in a car with no low-end power while a turbo is ideal in a car or truck with no top-end power.

in the beginning, Turbo charger was known as Turbosupercharger or turbo. Turbocharger is a gas compressor designed for effecting pressured induction of an internal engine. On the other hand, supercharger is an air compressor used for forced induction of an engine. By adding a turbine to turn the supercharger had led to a "turbosupercharger". And the engine, which was installed with superchargeror turbocharger, was known as “turbosupercharged”. The word gradually was used in its short form, i.e., turbocharger.

A turbocharger is regarded better than a supercharger. Because, it compresses the in let air to the engine more efficiently than a supercharger. It makes use of the otherwise wasted heat from the exhaust and transform it into power to the engine. It is driven by the exhaust gases of an engine.

The system consists of a turbine and a compressor on a shared shaft. The turbine section turns the heat energy from the exhaust to power. And this then forces the compressor adding higher pressure to the engine, with each cylinder is filled with greater mass of air and power. The turbocharger raises the pressure at the point where air is getting into the cylinder. That means a larger mass of air or oxygen will be forced in as the inlet manifold pressure increases. Here, more fuel will contribute additional oxygen thus increasing the power and torque productivity of the engine. The rise in pressure at the point of cylinder air intake is known as forced induction.

Technically, car engine is an air pump that burns fuel. The engine takes power as air movement increases. Turbo chargers as well as super chargers are applied for pumping air into the engine, that increases the horsepower and torque enormously. To put it differently, turbochargers and superchargers are used to enhance on the size-to-output productivity of an engine overcoming its inherent constraints.

These types of power boosters increase the pressure at the point where air is going into the cylinder of a car engine; a greater mass of air (oxygen) will be forced in as the inlet manifold pressure increases. They pressurize the intake of an engine many fold over the normal atmospheric pressure. Both force air into the engine, which in turn increase much more fuel and power in each cylinder.The difference is in their source of energy. The more air that you can put in place and our of it, the more power it will create. This increases horsepower and torque immensely.The extra oxygen makes it possible to include more fuel, increasing the power and torque output of the engine. Both work to boost the quantity of air the engine takes in on a given stroke. Furthermore, they work best if the exhaust system is free flowing, so that it will not restrict the flow going out.
