Kitting out your house with a new dishwasher can seem a daunting task. There's so much choice, there are different sizes, and so many variations in programme that it is often difficult to distinguish what you need from what you desire. So if you find yourself asking: "what dishwasher?" read on.
Appliances size
The size of what dishwasher you choose depends on the amount of room you have in your kitchen. Dishwasher generally come in three sizes; standard, slimline and table top. So what do each of these dishwashers offer?
Standard - the standard dishwasher is 60cm wide and less than 90cm tall. This is the perfect size to slot into the kitchen in the place of a cupboard, underneath the kitchen surface.
Slimline - slimline dishwashers are (unsurprisingly) slimmer than standard models. They tend to measure around 45cm wide but are still built to fit underneath a 90cm high kitchen surface.
Table top dishwashers - these models are miniature dishwashers for people who haven't got the floor space to accommodate a full sized one. They can be placed on counter-tops as well as inside cupboards and measure just 45cm high x 55cm wide x 48cm deep.
Dishwasher capacity
Each of these dishwashers caters for a different amount of place settings. When you're choosing what dishwasher to buy, think about the amount of washing up you do every day and the amount of people in your household.
Top tip: remember one place setting is the utensils, glasses, dishware laid out for one person during a meal. So therefore, 12 place settings is the equivalent of 12 bowls, 12 side plates, 12 large plates 12 glasses and 12 sets of cutlery.
So what dishwasher should different family sizes choose?
Singles/couples - can easily manage with a table top or slimline dishwasher. Table tops tend to accommodate six place settings and slimlines cater for eight.
Small families - a slimline or standard dishwasher is adequate for most small families. Bear in mind that if you have babies dishwashers can be in much higher demand because of the amount of feeds and therefore cleaning which is necessary per day. Many dishwashers will sterilise bottles, so you don't have to go to the trouble of investing in further equipment.
Larger families - families of four or more people generally require a full size dishwasher to cater for a single day's dish-washing. For families of six you may need even more than 12 place settings, so look for a 14 place setting model - Hotpoint dishwashers now extend to this amount.
However, smaller families shouldn't be put off buying a smaller dishwasher if they have the space for it. Just ensure you choose a model with eco wash or half load so you can still run your daily wash, but do so without wasting energy and water.
What dishwasher is best for the environment?
Most dishwashers are less damaging to the environment than you might think. In terms of energy, if you choose an A rated or A+ rated appliance you will be have a very energy efficient (and therefore cost effective) dishwasher. In terms of water usage, many dishwashers will actually save water on what you would normally consume. This is because you are performing one wash per day, rather than one per meal as may be the case when washing up by hand.
Additional benefits of dishwasher cleaning include hygiene, which is vastly improved by the high temperature the water in the dishwasher is heated to and the lack of germ spreading items like sponges or tea towels.
