Drainage system is the process of directing dirty water away from the sanitation rooms, kitchen and car washing areas. There are two types of drainage system namely Foul Water systems and Surface Water systems. Water from sanitation rooms, kitchens and car wash areas is referred to as foul water while rainwater is referred to as surface water.
Rainwater can either be discharged into a soak-away, watercourse, surface water sewer or be drained into foul water drainage system. Drain has gully traps, which stop foul water from escaping from the drains. However, it is important to ensure that foul water do not connect with surface water. Drainage is very important since it prevent spread of diseases and mosquito breeding. Firstly, you need to plan on how to come up with a drainage system. The main thing to consider is to ensure that the route of the waste is as straight and as short as possible. Ensure that your pipes do not run very steep through measuring using the rule of thumb or the surveyor's site level. However, if you don't have one of these you can launch a datum point and use a hosepipe filled with water to institute levels and estimate the fall in such a way that if a hosepipe is over flown with water, the level of the water will equal out at each end.
After planning, the next thing is to prepare the trench. You should not prejudice the permanence of the building during the installation of a drain trench. However, for the drains run corresponding to the buildings ensure that their foundations are not damaged. When installing a new drainage do not dig the trench too long. Due to some circumstances like the soil, conditions and the depth the trench need to be supported to prevent it from collapsing.
The trench should be as narrow as possible and its base should be clean and even without protruding stones or bricks. However, do not use bricks to support the pipe to avoid damage. Squash the bedding well with the hollows meant to accommodate the joints in the pipes. Once you are through, backfill the trench using the original dug material or the granular material.
Protect any drain system that is less than 600 mm below the garden due to possible damage of garden activities and gardening tools using a 50 mm layer of a lean concrete or preformed concrete slabs.
Ensure that all parts of your drainage system are designed so that all parts of pipe work are accessible to a set of drain rods. Moreover, direction change of the pipe work should be provided with an inspection chamber to allow rodding access. A junction without a manhole, access should be sited on the branch drain within 12 meters of the junction. Remember, it is important to follow local building control regulations.
