Selecting and installing a kitchen sink is an important kitchen plumbing challenge. In this article I will describe important considerations for a homeowner preparing to choose a kitchen sink. What kind of faucet will work best for you is based on your personal needs. You may wish to have different kitchen faucets for various uses, or you may want to add particular accessories to your faucet.

I will begin with a discussion of the faucet handle, and a consideration of which types of handles are good for which circumstances. Some faucets come with only one handle, The one handed faucet may be part of the spout assembly, or may stand separately. A one handle faucet permits rapid single handed adjustment of the water temperature and flow. This can be useful for people who have a hand that is dirty and or otherwise occupied. Less commonly, but significantly, a one handle faucet might be useful for a person who is crippled. Additional kitchen faucets are made with dual handle action. One handle controls the cold water flow and the other controls the hot water flow. This model is advantageous because the apparatus permits separate adjustment of the hot and cold water flow, and thus more precise regulation of both flow and temperature. The two-handled faucets also come in more styles. For convenience sake, most handles come as a lever or x shaped design. Both shapes are ideal for grasping, although people with manual disabilities find the lever handles easier to manage.

If you plan to use your sink for washing large pots and other cooking utensils, be sure to select a faucet which comes with a large spout that you can easily move to the side. Also be sure the faucet has an elevated arch, for example more than 35 cm or close to 15 inches. Such a faucet can be turned aside when you want to load your pots into the sink. You can subsequently maneuver the spout over the top of the pots being cleaned. Then, when you are done, you can swing the spout back to the side and remove the cooking pots. If you have a large sink with two or more basins, all served by one spout, then be sure to choose a spout with a wide reach, so that as you turn it this way and that the water flow can reach into the center of each basin

One unique type of faucet spout is known as the "pot filler." This spout is fixed to the kitchen wall close to the stove. It's purpose is to provide water for large cooking pots. The convenient location, close to the stove, saves the cook from the need to carry large pots, full of water, from the sink to the stove area. Installation of this spout necessitates having a distinct incoming ground water line.

{Faucets come in one of four different operational types. The oldest mechanism is the rubber washer faucet, next oldest is the ball faucet, and most modern are the ceramic cartridges and the ceramic discs. Rubber washer faucets are cheap; however, they wear out rapidly and must be replaced. Ceramic cartridge and disc faucets last much longer but require a larger cash layout.|The faucet's quality and durability depends on the material it is made of and its mechanism of operation. In order to turn the water flow on and off, faucets use one of 4 different mechanisms. The oldest faucets come with a rubber. Later came the ball valve faucet. Then came the ceramic cartridges and the disks. {Among the four faucet types,|When comparing the faucet types, the rubber washers are least expensive but also least durable. The ceramic cartirdge and disks catridge faucets are the most expensive and most durable.

The material a faucet is made of can improve its functioning and can make the difference between an ugly faucet and one that contributes positively to the kitchen decor. Typical high quality material used to make faucets includes brass and chrome. These two materials are both durable and consequently require little maintenance. The external look of a brass or chrome faucet can be altered by an overlay with materials such as nickel, stainless steel, copper, zinc, bronze, silver, or gold. The finish may be varied to a smooth or dull, lackluster look. The faucet may be adorned with various materials, such as porcelain, glass or wood.

One other option available to the homeowner, when planning to purchase a faucet is to install it directly through the sink or through the countertop next to the sink or else through the wall behind the sink. DIY homeowners can attempt to install the sink themselves. Whereas others may choose to employ the services of a professional plumber
