Booking a holiday is an exciting prospect, but arranging the extras to go with it seldom is. Have you remembered your travel insurance for your trip? What about your airport transfer? These little extras often catch us out, but there's no need to worry.

With regard to airport transfers, there's the choice of driving your own car to the airport, getting a taxi, or catching a bus or train. With so many different options, you might be wondering what the best one for you is. If you need a little help, then read this article for some tips.

Train

If you're travelling on your own, then taking a train is one of the best ways to reach the airport. It's cost effective, as you'll only need one return ticket, and it's usually quick ? providing there's no delays ? so you'll arrive in good time for checking in.

One problem about travelling by train is that not all UK airports have a direct connection. You may need a taxi transfer so costs can mount up. However, the major airports at Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester all have good rail connections, so you won't need a taxi. For more on getting to the airport by train, you can call National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 or visit their website.

Bus or Taxi

The bus is often the best option for budget solo travellers, as it is usually cheaper than the train, but it can take much longer. If time for your airport transfer isn't an issue, then a bus is for you. However, do bare in mind that most buses to London airports will require a transfer in London if you're coming from outside of London, and this will take at least half an hour.

Hailing a cab is a good option if there are a few of of you and you don't have far to make your transfer. It's also very hassle free, as the taxi can pick you up at your front door and drop you off at the airport. However, just be careful if you need to travel a distance of more than twenty miles, as the costs can really mount up.

Car

Driving your car to the airport is usually the most cost effective way of getting to the airport if you're in a group and your taxi fair would cost more than sixty pounds return. That's because airport parking is fairly cheap ? not coming in at more than fifty pounds a week at most major airports. That means that even including petrol costs, driving to the airport and parking can be much cheaper than public transport or a taxi.

Probably the best way to get to the airport ? for both solo travellers and groups ? is to get a friend or family member to drive you to the airport and then pick you off on your return. All you'll have to offer is to pay for petrol ? there's no need to park and there shouldn't be any transfer fee. Just make sure you have a reliable friend!
