Credit cards are handy and helpful conveniences in a modern life. They make it easy to pay your bills without looking into your bank account every single day. Unfortunately, many of us abuse our credit cards and end up having to fix bad credit. If you need to use your credit cards for their simplicity but avoid finding yourself awash in a sea of credit card bills, there are some guidelines you can follow to use credit cards responsibly.
Pay the Full Balance
If at all possible, you should pay off your credit card balance in full every month. Not only will this stop you from piling up a mountain of debt, you will save a lot of money on interest charges. Credit card interest can run anywhere from 13.5 to 21 percent.
Pay a Little Extra
If you do not have the cash to pay your balance entirely every month, at least add a little more on the minimum bill. Depending on the balance, adding just $50 a month to your minimum payment can get you hundreds of dollars over the course of just one year. If you do not have enough to pay your balance in full, be certain to you refrain from paying with that credit card until the balance is paid fully.
Request a Lower Rate
If you are having trouble reducing your credit card balance but have always paid timely, try communicating with the credit card company and asking them to lower your rate. You will be surprised to see how often the company will say yes. You can typically save 1 or 2 percent on interest.
Debt Consolidation
Another option for consumers in credit card hell is debt consolidation. This is a way to take all of your credit card debts and pay them off with a loan. Consolidation loans usually have a lower interest rate. It is vital that you stop using the credit cards while you are paying down a consolidation loan.
Home-Equity Loans
If all else fails, consider a home-equity loan, where you get a loan based on the value of your property. Again, it is necessary you avoid increasing credit card debt during the time you are paying off any loan meant to pay on your balances.
Credit Repair Services
If you are having trouble getting a lower rate or a loan to pay down your credit, it is necessary to find out the reason you were denied. You can find some good credit repair companies out there that can fix bad credit by looking at your credit report to be sure there are no problems. These companies can fix your credit score and put you back on track to paying down your credit cards faster.
Credit repair companies negotiate with the credit reporting agencies to fix your credit score and ensure you do not have similar problems in the future. When your credit score is in order, it will be easier to get lower rates on your credit cards and enjoy these modern conveniences at a lower cost.
