Ways to Ask for a Job Salary Increase

If you feel you deserve a higher pay and salary increase is now overdue, you might be puzzled on how you are going to ask for it. Sitting around and waiting for your boss doesn't seem to work. Well, it's time to ask for a raise and here are some ways to do it:

1. Know your worth. Know the value of your field through online calculator such as Salary.com and know how much salary does your job can really give you. Oftentimes, the sites will give you range, just figure out where do you fit with the given ranges. And to do this, you must enter the number of years you are working with your current company, factors such as skills and work experiences that adds to your worth in the market.

2. Assess the financial status of your current employer if it is doing well. It is not certainly the right time to ask for a raise if you know that your company is going through a lot of problems when it comes to financial stability. Do some research, look for some financial reports or some business news, don't just rely on the office grapevine alone.

3. Evaluate your situation if you are worth for a salary increase. Ask yourself if you really deserve a raise, if you are doing your job well, if you are very productive and not liability to the company. It is important to have a solid proof of accomplishments to help you back up the request. It is based on your performance and should be in the scope of your skills presented in your resume.

4. Check out company policies regarding the compensation. Ask the company personnel or read your company handbook if you have one. Most companies have guidelines when it comes to the salary raise such as annual rates, percentages, etc...

5. Be ready for an argument. But first, consider the right timing for an approach. Consider selling yourself again like what you did when you were trying to get in with your target company. List your accomplishments and bring documents to be presented during your discussions, start from recent and work your way backwards. However, you must be ready to say NO if you are not satisfied with the offer. What if you receive a salary you do not deserve? Will you accept it or not? Be ready to decide if you are going to stay or leave the company to look for a better opportunity. Try to draw different alternatives aside from a raise. Part of negotiations is compromise. What if your boss tells you that he is not happy with the performance? Be prepared for the immediate answers or actions. But you should not confront your boss.

6. Ask your boss for an appointment. Send a letter to ask for a convenient time to discuss matters in a business meeting. Never discuss through email or phone. Try treating him out, show your boss how serious you are in asking for an increase. Give time to discuss matters.

7. State your case well. Never approach your boss without preparing your case. Be ready to present your reasons why you deserve a raise. Try to summarize your achievements and skills that help you to be successful in your area.
