Berkey uses gravity filtration which is basically the bad water goes in the top and ‘falls’ through not one but 2 filter chambers for that wonderful crisp clean water. Of course if you choose a larger one there are more filter chambers which can speed up the filtration process from as slow as 2.75 gallons/ hour to 26.0 gallons per hour. And even though you choose the smallest one for you needs you are able to add filters, usually only up to 4 in the smaller ones. There are several sizes of water filters on the market so picking the one that best fits your needs can be a little tricky. But Berkey made a great table to show you which one of their products fits you:

Travel Berkey 1-3 people
Big Berkey 1-4 people
Berkey Light 1-5 people
Royal Berkey 2-6 people
Imperial Berkey 4-8+ people
Crown Berkey 6-12+ people

When you fill up that tall glass of ice cold water on a hot day, the water dripping down the side as you splash the ice cubes in there - the cool water hits your lips and the cool refreshing water hits your tongue… you spit it out. The funky taste of the water ruined the whole experience, it tasted dirty and minerally. As thirsty as you are you quickly down the rest of the glass shuttering with each gulp.

Don’t let this happen to you; get yourself equipped with a water filter and fast. Not just any water filter but the best water filters available!

You have your choice of their Berkey Black Elements or their Super Sterasyl Ceramic Filters- they are about the same in capability and price but the Black Elements is a newer design and is able to get rid of more lead and MTBE’s, and chlorine than the other. As well as being able to remove food coloring from the water.

As the water comes down the filtering doesn’t stop after the initial fall it goes into the lower chambers which contain one of two types of filters, however these are completely optional and depends on your taste of if there is extra fluoride or what not in your water these will help. There are the PF-2 (PF meaning Post Filtration) and PF-4 models that are designed to work with the specific filter in the upper chambers. The PF-2 is designed to accompany the Black Berkey and has a life of 1000 gallons or 2 years whichever comes first and the PF-4 will last only 6 months with its partner the Super Sterasyl Ceramic Filters. So depending on your water consumption your choice of upper filters may be swayed by the lower filters you choose- but remember these are optional.
