Washing Your Shower Curtains

Shower curtains get dirty. You would think they would be one of the very clean items in your house, but the damp conditions, and soap scum that builds up makes this a cleaning mess.

The soapy scum that accumulates on shower curtains makes them look dirty and old. However, you can bring back their new appearance by following a few tips.

Skin plus your bar of soap equals scummy residue. Add hard water, and you have a real messy problem on your hands. It's the bar soap that is to blame. Consider using body wash, as it will not leave the scummy deposits on your shower curtain and walls.

Plastic and vinyl curtains can be cleaned by putting your curtains in your washing machine and adding 1 cup of bleach and a capful of detergent, along with a few dirty towels or a blanket. Run on gentle cycle with either warm or hot water.

To clean your fabric shower curtains, take them down by unclipping the rings connecting it to the rod, and simply toss it into the washing machine with 1 cup of baking soda. Wash through 1 complete washing cycle in warm or hot water, or read the manufacturers' instructions for details specific to your brand and fabric material type.

Right after the final spin cycle, remove the curtains from the clothes washer and shake gently to remove any excess water. Replace them by hanging them back up on the curtain rod to dry. The effect of gravity, along with the hot steam for the shower or bath will remove any wrinkles which will disappear within a day or so.
