There has been a lot of debate in churches across the globe as to if they ought advertise or not. This often comes from a certain amount of arrogance that some Christians have. The very word preach means to proclaim. Church advertising is simply preaching to the world about Christ. Don’t believe me? Ask yourself this question, what is the church? God has recorded in His word that the church is actualy the very body of Christ. This means when we lift our church up to the community then we are really undertaking to lift Christ up before their eyes!

If you think about it church advertising has been going on since there was a church. In the early days advertising simply ment speaking to lots of people. In fact, the church members would do such a good job at speaking that people would set up outside their houses just to be the first that would get to hear them talk again.

So what forms of advertising did the early church use? Typically they would use word of mouth advertising to get word out that the apostle was in town. As a matter of actuality Paul was so well known just by word of mouth that people praised God when they heard that he was now preaching the gospel. Paul would send letters as well to let people know when he planned to stop by so that the word of mouth advertising could get started.

So we can see that letters were applied as well as people spreading the news. Was there any other form of church advertising ideas people had that they applied? The truth is that if they had been doing the open type of marketing that we enjoy today things would not have gone so well for them. The laws of the land in those days ment that openly sharring your faith in this way would mean your certain death. Even so they wanted badly to go from door to door and tell all people about God. Maybe we ought take this lesson and apply it to our own selves today and see what we should do?

There was of course one other way they spread the word about christianity... but it cost them a lot. In reality it price them their lives. People hold signs about abortions and other sins on the side of the road today. The lines of protesters in those days were lines of people willing to be eaten alive and killed for their beliefs. There has never been another way to advertise that makes such an impact as when we spend our lives to reach others. An act similar that would without a doubt demonstrait how crucial the congregations belief was in Christ.

What would happen in our world now if we did what they did and we were willing to give up our lives? I do not believe signs on the side of the road will get us there, nor will shouting at individuals on the side of the road that they are going to hell. So what can we do?

God said to come out from among the people and be different. As things stand the church looks similar a normal business and the so called christians act just similar everyone else. Maybe if we began following God our lives of service to Him would be the greatest form of advertising there would be?

The saying goes that you just have to live your life in front of individuals for them to be impacted by God. It will not work though unless your life looks unlike than all people elses life! Marriages in the so called christian world match those of the secular world in numbers of divorce. If the bible said that those who love God follow His commands then not some of us who call ourselves Christians really love our God.

I believe this is the first step to getting our message out again. Cleaning the church up from the inside out is the best way to get our advertising in the right place again. We need repentance. We also require to openly make it clear that some of the individuals in church are not christians! This may cause some drama but our advertising of the word of God is being hurt otherwise. We must do something drastic.
