Vinyl bags have been used for years in the retail industry. When it comes to selecting a vinyl bag for your own product, things can get a little confusing. Which bag should you choose? There are a large number of options for you to pick from.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing a vinyl bag.

1. Material. Anything less than 6 gauge of thickness in a vinyl bag is too flimsy to really hold up to heavier products and it will feel cheap. While there are heavier bags available, the cost does go up incrementally with each point. 6 gauge is ideal for both pricing and impressing customers. It is just thin enough to store easily and yet thick enough to hold your products securely and provide a useful bag that customers can use again and again once the product is gone.

2. Style. You'll want to select a vinyl bag design that best suits your products. The four main types include zippered closures, open tops (usually with handles), drawstring closures and snap closures. The gift bag style with rope handles is perfect for offering swag at a party or other special occasion, but can also be used as a packaging detail. Zippered and snap tops work very well with toiletries, but can easily be used with just about anything else.

3. Quality. The quality of the vinyl bag you choose isn't just about looking good on the shelf. A zipper bag, for example, with toiletries inside can be used as a travel bag for accessories and makeup, while a nice vinyl gift bag can be used again to give a gift to someone else. Look for heat sealed seams which will last far longer than glued ones and which will provide a sturdier bag for your products.

4. Use. Bags come in different designs for a reason, to suit various uses. Most stores find that pouches are easiest to store, since they fold flat and offer no extra bulk on one end, as the flat bottomed ones do. They are also easily used for everything from cards or stationery to bottles and heavier items.

5. Looks. Review the lines and selecting a bag that has pleasing lines to compliment what you are offering. A drawstring bag has very different lines than one that snaps shut, for example, so it's important to consider which design looks best with the items that will be packaged inside it. You can also add decorative elements, such as tissue paper, to enhance the overall effect.

Vinyl bags are extremely useful for packaging and can lift sales by increasing the perceived value of a product or set of products. Just seeing two or three items inside a nice vinyl bag is often enough to encourage a client to purchase, particularly when the packaging can be used again later. In today's economy, people are looking for the most bang for their buck possible and this type of packaging is perfect for that.
