Using Botox to Eliminate Wrinkles

As a person ages it is inevitable that wrinkles will start to develop in her face. But that doesn't mean that all wrinkles are caused by aging. There are other reasons our faces start to look older in this way.

The truth is, having wrinkles in your face is perfectly natural. In fact facial wrinkles allow us to communicate subtle feelings to other people without having to verbalize them.

For example, we are all familiar with the furrowed brow, or a bit of wrinkling around the eyes, nose or mouth. These "dynamic" wrinkles are an important part of the way we "talk" to others. There are hundreds of these expressive wrinkles and each combination tells a little story about what we're thinking.

Dynamic wrinkles like these are caused by tiny muscle contractions immediately under the skin. These are mechanisms we have developed for communication over thousands and thousands of years.

The wrinkles that start to appear on your face as you get older are different. Rather than being caused by muscle contractions, these wrinkles are caused by the aging process itself. As you get older your skin dries out. The upper layers of the skin gradually develop a dried out, weathered look, and the lower layers of the skin lose a good deal of their elasticity.

Our skin is much more complex than a simple layer that covers the interior of our bodies. It actually consists of three quite unique layers that perform different functions. All of them are impacted by aging and the end result is that our skin looks older, dried out and saggy.

Because of the effects of time our skin is much less able to withstand the effects of weather and the pressures of day to day life. Its ability to rejuvenate itself to retain its youthful appearance is seriously compromised. The end result is almost always looser, more saggy skin filled with wrinkles.

Roughly speaking, here is what happens to our skin as the result of aging. The outer layer called the "epidermus" becomes thinner and less pliable as a result of the natural process of aging. This process is aggravated and accelerated by constant exposure to the elements.

This makes it less capable of protecting the second layer called the "dermus". The dermus normally transmits nutrients from the underlying layer called the "subcutaneous" to the outer layer. But aging makes it less capable of doing that.

As a result, the epidermus - the part we see - cannot get the nutrients it needs to stay pliable and youthful looking, and the other two layers lose their ability to compensate. In other words, as we age the skin loses its ability to rejuvenate itself and progressively begins to look older and older as time goes by.

Botox treatments cannot stop this aging process. What it can do is reduce the exaggerated appearance of dynamic wrinkles. As we mentioned above, dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle contractions. As we get older, these wrinkles become more pronounced because our skin is less pliamble.

Botox inhibits dynamic wrinkles by blocking the normal chemical process which sends messages to your facial muscles telling them to contract. Where there is no muscle contraction there won't be any dynamic wrinkles.

Many people think that botox works by poisoning or paralyzing muscles by injecting them with a type of botulism. This is not correct. The active ingredient in botox is actually a chemical called botulinum toxin type A or B. What this does is temporarily break the connection with the nerves that cause specific muscles to contract.

The effect of botox treatments is that they inhibit dynamic wrinkles in the small isolated areas where botox is injected. After 4 or 5 months as new connectors develop between the nerves and muscles the effectiveness of botox injections wears off and the muscle action returns to normal.

The simplicity and convenience of having botox cosmetic treatments explains why this has become the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the US over the last decade or so. It is a risk free method to soften the effects of aging. The procedure can be performed quickly and the effects are almost immediate. It is also surpringly inexpensive.
