It's not often you encounter a car as complete as the new Honda Civic Vi hatch. This five door is intelligent, efficient, beautifully engineered and wonderfully well built

Check it out; roomy versatile interior, convincing list of safety hardware, an engine designed for low fuel consumption and emissions but with a very healthy power output, confident handling, comfortable ride, excellent ergonomics and, finally the kind of quality only Japan seems able to achieve. This is a car that's exactly right for these demanding times.

Devised in Honda's Offenbach design centre and manufactured in its Suzuka plant, the new hatch is obviously larger and more utilitarian than the previous generation Civic three door. It's longer, taller and sits on a greater wheelbase.
While the new Civic's engine is an evolution of the 1.6 liter for of the previous model, there are so many changes it's almost new. Although capacity has been increased to 1.7 liters, the engine is much lighter. A plastic intake manifold, compact intake resonator, a stainless steel exhaust manifold and an integrated catalytic converter are the major measures.

The 1.7 is quite powerful for its capacity, its output of 96kW better than most 1.8 liter engines. Like all recent Honda engines, the Civics’ meet California's tough LEV (low emission vehicles) pollution standard. The pursuit of lightness and efficiency even extends to the new Civic's steering. It's electric, just like the S2000.

Civic's suspension is also noteworthy, although for very different reasons. Honda, long an advocate of double A-arm suspension, has switched to struts. At the front of the car, at least.

Inside, the Civic's flat floor is uncluttered. No console divides the front seats. And the gear lever-for both manual and automatic transmissions-emerges from a bulge in the centre of the dash, just below the audio system. The front seats (driver's only with height adjustment) are generously proportioned and well shaped. Rear seat leg room is exceptionally good, even behind a 180cm-plus driver. Head room isn't quite so ample, but the Civic's rear seat is a place most people will be able to get comfortable.

Both cushions are backrest of the rear seat are split 60/40. The cushion sections flip forwards to vertical and the seatback section can be folded flat after removal of the headrest. Fitting a chid seat doesn't affect cargo capacity at all. The three child restraint anchorage points are in a cross member right behind the base of the seatback.

Although the rear seat folds, there are three lap-sash belts in the back. The front seatbelts are equipped with pre-tensioners and force limiters. Dual front airbags are standard.

Ride quality seems very impressive. The new Civic appears to have greater wheel travel than previous models, and uses are to good effect. The hatch's handling seems sweetly balanced. Both ends grip well and once the front of the car begins to push wide in gentle under steer., lifting pressure on the throttle doesn't bring any snappish reaction from the rear end. The engine is impressively flexible, eagerly responsive, smooth and quiet.

Aside from the absence of ABS, the Civic hatch's equipment list contains almost everything a customer could desire for the price. Air-conditioning, remote central locking, power windows, in-dash CD player are all-standard.
So add value to the list of reasons why the new Civic hatch is a small car you must consider.
