You Need It When?

Procrastinators, take note - waiting until the last minute to update your teacher resume and cover letter puts you at risk for missing out on your dream job! I can’t believe how many times I have heard, “I need my resume today.” My response is, “Why did you wait.” You should always have your resume ready to go, especially in this economy. You never know when you will need it, so be prepared.

Picture this: You’re a teacher at your desk, hard-at-work amidst the usual daily grind, when your telephone rings or you receive an email. Surprise! It’s a recruiter or a networking contact is calling! Maybe they have the perfect opportunity for you. Or they are informing you of an upcoming job fair where their will be many school districts you are interested in. Only problem is, you need a resume and cover letter pronto!

How do you reply?

Sure thing…let me e-mail it to you right now.
Uh, well, you see…I haven’t really updated my resume since I got this job 10 years ago, and I’ve really accomplished a lot here-made the school district’s test scores look fabulous and cured world hunger in the process-but none of that is listed on my resume. Can you give me a couple of weeks to get something over to you?

If you answered A, then go to the head of the class. If you answered B, however, we’ve got some work to do! Now, if you’re sitting there shaking your head and acting like you’re never going to get a recruiter call like that, think again, because as a resume writing company specializing in educators, we get that phone call at least two or three times each week! So many job seekers are not prepared for a job fair or a posting - it is really a bad way to begin your job search.

The bottom line: Be prepared. Keep your resume and cover letter current. It doesn’t have to be a recruiter who calls…it could be your friend, or a family member, or someone you met at a networking function last week calling to tell you about an exciting opportunity. It may be job advertisement posted or a job fair that will be happening on the weekend. Time is an important factor, and if you’re ready to jump on an opportunity when it falls in your lap, you will make a solid first impression on that prospective employer.

Dump those procrastinator tendencies and be proactive - your teaching career will thank you for it!
