Interior design, like the fashion world, is always changing - so what are the new key elements to a modern home? As 2010 quickly approaches, we take a look at the trends that look set to transform our homes over the coming year.

Eclectic one-offs - New and old, family heirlooms and items that have caught your eye at antique markets as well as modern design stores - feel free to mix it up! We have seen enough of the uniform design look, so the year ahead will see a big trend towards unique pick-and-mix design that reflects your own personality better.

Colourful prints - As well as art deco and art nouveau-style print work, we will see prints used heavily to add colour to interiors. From organic floral designs, to wild animal prints and traditional paisley, prints will be everywhere from curtains, to furniture to flooring - particularly rug design. We like the selection currently available from Modern Rugs - fresh and bold and bang on trend.

Artisan inspired - Artisan products are back in a big way. Look out for hand-crafted products and designs as a refreshing change from the factory-produced monotonous modern designs we have seen over the past few years.

Keep it green - Consumers have a growing green conscience and the interior design world is finally starting to reflect this. Sustainable and Fair Trade products for the home will be big news, allowing you to see where your product has been made and who it has been made by, so that you can make a more informed choice about your home furnishings.

Go global - As the world becomes more globally connected, our interiors will reflect the growing multi-culturalism of our society. Modern interiors will embrace design influences from around the globe - from China to Latin America, Russia to India.

Colour trends - As we see a growing trend for greener interiors, so we see a new colour trend approaching. Organics are everywhere, with mother nature the key inspiration. Natural tones of brown, sandy yellows, deep tan and beige will give our homes an earthy and relaxed feel.

The home as sanctuary - After the upheaval of the recent recession, we are going to see a return to the idea of our homes as havens. Keeping our homes serene with earthy tones, and natural textiles, will give us a place to relax and escape from the hustle and bustle.
