Uncover How Authentic Vintage T Shirts Might Not Be Vintage

If you're an admirer of vintage style t shirts, you've likely become familiar with the way the dynamic strength of publicity and commerce can deform and degenerate vocabulary itself. Although it may not matter when deciding between a frozen burrito that claims a "striking new flavor" and one claiming a "stunning new taste," a minor transformation in wording may create a gargantuan difference when searching out new pieces for your vintage tshirt collection. Still, perceiving the real definitions of two uncomplicated words may help you not make a terribly major but rather simple miscalculation.

The term "vintage," for instance, is supposed to refer to an item that was authentically crafted during a particular period in years gone by, such as a wine of a certain vintage. Or a vintage 1963 Ford Galaxie 500. Or even those vintage concert t shirts that have been broadcasting your awesomeness since you were a teenager.

"Retro," by contrast, indicates a product that is crafted now but is a nod to an older approach. Retro is more or less a recreation or reprint of something vintage, but is not literally vintage itself. Currently made flood pants are retro. Mohawks are retro. Neon-colored headbands are retro. Lamentable, yes, but retro.

To state it even more plainly, if you happen upon a secondhand shop and invest in some eighties tee shirts that are used, those are vintage. If you hit Hot Topic and invest in a new black tshirt with the original A-Team cast on it, that's retro.

No problem, right? So why is there seemingly all this confusion? Well, a chunk of the problem is due to the fact that, to lots of young folk, "vintage" and "retro" are both just classifications of "old." Is that vintage Ghostbusters tee rad because the shirt is original, or because the film is old? Are those vintage rock tees awesome because they were purchased at the live musical performance, or because the groups are retro popular? A modern youth frequently doesn't give it much notice and creates no discrimination between the two.

An additional chunk of the difficulty is the market. Retro tshirts are totally in fashion these days. The symbols and motifs of cherished things of earlier times have emerged as extraordinarily trendy yet again. Honestly, they've become so marketable that countless tee designers have quit merely having an A-Team, Coca-Cola, or Def Leppard logo, and instead started to design the tshirts in a way that makes them seem previously worn, fully loved, and accordingly distressed. The result is retro tee shirts that look like authentic vintage tees but are really just portrayals of the real thing.

So, what's an ordinary devotee of vintage tshirts to do? Well, you can make certain you distinguish the division between the words "vintage" and "retro." You should obviously make certain to research product explanations rigorously, staying conscious of choices of words like "licensed tee shirts" (which would suggest that the legal rights to reprint the layout, objects, and/or intentions were purchased but the tee itself was currently fabricated). And, when you're not sure, you can always contact the tee shirt company and discuss with them honestly about whether their tee shirts are simply retro or unquestionably vintage.

On the other hand, if you aren't a connoisseur or a stickler, this possibly matters to you not even slightly. Who, besides a collector, actually is dying to score a 24-year old tee shirt? I mean, unlike a vintage mansionette, many goods aren't naturally made to be around 20 years later. Specifically clothing. And, more notably, popularly priced shirts. Possibly a retro tee shirt categorically is the best of both worlds.

Or maybe I'm only feeling nostalgic. Some percentage of me daydreams of a day when the expression "vintage" would be wholly and suitably applied to my journeys to purchase old-fashioned 45 rpm records and eighties tee shirts, instead of being used to continue the "everything ancient-looking is cool" kink. I imagine I'm just old.

Wait a sec - does that make me cool?
