Most fears can be linked to a past traumatic experience, and the panic attacks can be triggered by anything that reminds the victim of the unpleasant experience, the same scenario applies to the fear of flying.

Fear of flying, also referred to as aerophobia, aviatophobia, aviophobia or pteromechanophobia is a complex anxiety disorder that is associated with a person’s fear of being on an airplane or any other flying vehicle such as a helicopter.

The fear of flying causes stress and anxiety. This might have far reaching consequences, because it will prevent you from going on vacations or visiting family and friends, and it can even impact your career negatively as it will prevent you from travelling on business trips requiring air travel.

Aerophobia is normally triggered by several factors, such as other phobias related to the aspect of flying, examples of these include:

- Acrophobia: The thought of flying high in the sky;

- Claustrophobia: Idea of being in a small room full of strangers;

- Agoraphobia: this has to do with the fear of open spaces;

- Helplessness and little control of your flight;

- Being far away from people, places and things familiar to you;

- Turbulence, fear of hijacking or terrorism attacks;

- Vestibular (inner ear) and traveler thrombosis are medical issue that causes disorientation, dizziness, and nausea.

Signs And Symptoms

Aviophobia signs and symptoms are similar to those of other phobias and include: uncontrollable shaking, heavy labored breathing, sweating, stomach aches and heart palpitations. Other extreme manifestations may include:

  • Vomiting or panic attacks just by the mentioning or sight of an airplane;

  • Prickly sensations;

  • Dry mouth, flushed or pale face;

  • Narrowed perceptions, preservative thinking or poor/ clouded judgment;

  • Impaired memory.

Overcoming Fear Of Flying

It is possible to overcome your fear of flying, as so many others have been able to, by undergoing therapy or through the use of other techniques like:

1. Share your story: Problem shared is half solved, admit you are a fearful flyer.
2. Educate yourself: Educating yourself about the realities of air travel can considerably diminish your fear. Others attend courses (for people with the phobia or for people interested in aviation) to achieve the same result. Some airline and travel companies run courses to help people get over the fear of flying.
3. Medication: Psychoactive medications such as benzodiazepines or other relaxant/depressant drugs may treat fear of flying in individuals experiencing anxiety due to phobia.
4. Change of thoughts: Behavioral technique for a fear of flying such as Cognitive behavior therapy and Systematic desensitization rests on the theory, that phobia is due to an initial sensitizing event (ISE) that has created the feelings of fear to fly. By helping the patient to uncover the event, the emotions around the event, and understand the source of their fear will help lessen the fear itself.
