The UFC Middleweight Division has really taken a turn lately. It has not been for the worst, though. The division itself may be the hottest in the UFC, with no signs of slowing down. The instant classic between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen at UFC 117, showed us two things. It proved that Silva is still the top of the division, no matter what. Like him or not, whether you think he was lucky or not, he won the fight. And it also proved another thing, that this division’s battle for the next title shot is closer than you think.

So where do we go from here? There are many options. One being an immediate rematch for Sonnen. It would be hard to deny him it, in one regard. He controlled the champion for the most of five rounds, and was nearly a winner by unanimous decision. The fight has been praised by fans and critics alike. However, going against him, is the fact that he cannot finish. Many pundits say he should have closed the fight if he wanted to be in the next title fight. It is hard to disagree with, but it is also hard to keep a guy who dominated the champion so long out of the picture.

Another option is Vitor Belfort. Belfort also stakes claim to a title fight. He was scheduled for the fight at UFC 112 in April, but became injured in training. Dana White had gone on the record stating he was next after the Sonnen fight, but that was before an instant classic happened. There’s a real chance that Belfort may have to wait for that immediate rematch.

Others are climbing the rankings, as well. Yushin Okami is probably next in line, dominating fighters at an impressive clip. Jake Shields was signed away from Strikeforce, where he was undefeated. It will be hard to keep him out of the picture. However it shapes up, there are many elite fighters, turning this in to the UFC’s premier division.
