If you need some options for backing up several hundred gigabytes of information, here are a few. Right off the bat you don’t want to use disks if you can help it, unless you have a lot of time. An average CD only holds about 700 megabytes and DVD’s only hold a few gigs.

All the backup options listed below have their good points and bad points. It’s really up to you to determine which one is best for you depending on the sensitive your information is and how often it changes.

The latest option is hard drive docks, often referred to as ‘toasters.’ Essentially it acts like a thumb flash drive that you pop in except it’s for hard drives. With no wiring or hookups, you just slide a hard drive into the toaster and it gives you access to your system. Then just backup your information and take it with you just like a flash. They are almost reasonable if you can get a hardware coupon codes

Another backup device is an external wired hard drive. Depending on what kind of computer you are using and what you are using it for will help decide which one to get. A laptop with only a USB port (which is the slowest) may be your only option. The next option would be Firewire, which is faster. If you have an option between Firewire and USB, get Firewire. Finally, for the onsite externals, is a SATA, which is the fastest. A SATA will give you the purest copy of your files. You can get an external drive with a Terabyte of storage for less a couple of hundred dollars with the right coupon code. Of course, everyone wants the fastest but, remember a USB port is the most common port for a computer and might prove to be important if are doing work out in the middle of nowhere.

Just a note, you will need to continuously backup your system for the few times that it fails, because it will. A backup source is no good unless you use it.

USB thumb drives are a great option because they are so small and now hold up to 64 gigabytes worth of information and will have even more space pretty soon. Although USB’s are relatively slow and somewhat high priced per gigabyte, they are very handy to have around.

Online backups are another consideration. There are many services on the Internet that will offer you your own account in their server that your files will automatically backup in when you are online. The only problem with it is that you have to trust your personal, critical, or business crucial information with someone else. Now that does not mean that they will look at it but, what if they lose it? All you get is a refund, which is not much consolation when your months, or, years of work is priceless. In my opinion, it is much better to have a backup that is not transmitted over the internet, and one that you can keep with you or in a safe.
