Turnkey Websites - How Rich Do You Want To Be? (Part 2)

In the last article we discussed turnkey websites, their initial costs, and the over exuberant hype associated with the manner in which they are marketed. In this segment we will assume you've considered all the downfalls of buying a turnkey website and have decided that you have plenty of time on your hands and want to give it a try. So the first question is, "Now that I have purchased this site what do I do with it?"

Once the seller transfers ownership rights to the site, you are now officially a webmaster. Webmaster - doesn't that have a nice ring to it? However, don't rest on your laurels; you have plenty of work to do starting with looking at our site in detail. Review each of the pages, any banners that might be preloaded, the menu bar, preloaded Google ads - are you happy with the design and the way everything is laid out? If not, start by emailing the seller and asking for modifications to be made. The higher end turnkey websites usually offer unlimited support and will usually make minor changes for you at no additional cost. If you know some basic coding, turnkey websites come with a CPanel (control panel) that allows you to make changes on your own. Also, as mentioned in part one, some turnkey websites come with an Admin (administration) panel which are very user friendly and allow people with no coding experience to go in and modify their site simply by checking boxes, or changing parameters to specify colors, sizes of menu bars, text sizes and/or colors, etc. You can write a description of your website or add keywords in everyday language, or even eliminate or add pages to your site through the admin panel. Why would you want to make any changes to a website that is supposedly "turnkey" or ready to go? Well, for one thing turnkeys look - well, they look turnkey - like they were made from a cookie cutter. So if you can possibly add some bells and whistles that give your site some distinction from other turnkey websites than visitors will view your site differently. Add some banners of your own, change the menu bar colors, add buttons, affiliate links, or a site counter (so you will know how many visitors come to your site), anything to distinguish your site and make it look more professional than all the other turnkey sites.

Now that you have completed the aesthetic portion of your website, let's talk about what you need to do so that others will see it on the web? First of all, remember that good old fashion word of mouth is still as viable today as it was before the days of e-communications. If your website, involves products or services that you know your friends and relatives will enjoy tell them about it. A friend who tells two friends, who tells four friends, and so on will not only get people to look at your site but it's also free advertising. Make business cards with your name and website URL (Uniform Resource Locator - your website address which is usually in the form of http://mywebsiteaddress.com) on them - pass them out - put them on bulletin boards - it's all free advertising - well except for the costs of the cards themselves. Print advertising such as newspaper display ads may or may not bring people to your site. However, if you have a very small niche market product that almost no else has and almost everyone wants then print advertising may work very well for you. If you want to try this type of advertising, and before spending big bucks in large newspaper advertising, I would suggest the free newspapers you see on your local news stands to test the waters and see what kind of response you get from your ad.

Making your site "pretty" as noted above helps to keep visitors on your site, but getting visitors to your site via internet traffic starts with making search engines happy. When a bot (short for robot - software that gathers information) crawls along the World Wide Web looking for information and encounters your site, it has to be uniquely more important than the hundreds of thousands or even millions of other sites that also carry your product or similar products. Only then will they index your site high enough so that when someone does a search for your product it will come up as one of the first pages - preferably page one. Let's face it, most people who search for a product never go beyond page two of the results - so if you're not high on the index no one will see your site - no visitors no sales - it's that simple. In part three we will explore several ways that will give you the needed exposure so that search engines will not only find your site but will see your site worthy of a page one ranking.
