Facial tics are brief, repetitive, irregular spasms of the muscles of the face. They can be very different, but the most commonly seen are eye blinking, facial grimacing, nose wrinkling, mouth twitches, squinting as well as throat clearing and grunting. These tics are often symptomatic of nervous disorders like Tourette syndrome. They traditionally happen during childhood and can disappear within a few weeks, even if some can last indefinitely.

The causing factors of facial tics are still not very well understood, but a few things are thought to trigger or worsen the symptoms. Tics can be caused by some nutritional deficiencies like a magnesium insufficiency, but they can also very often be symptoms of other diseases such as Tourette syndrome, whose causes are most likely neurological, and, to a certain extent, genetic. Stress and anxiety have also been shown to provoke and notably increase the frequency of facial tics.

Facial tics are tough to deal with everyday particularly for children. Schoolmates, teachers and even sometimes parents, might not understand how hard it is to try to hold back the tics, particularly for an extended time period such as for instance a class. People will very often ask the child to "quit it", or might even mock him or her for having tics.

From facial grimaces to eye blinking, tics always feel embarrassing and inappropriate for children and adults alike. It is also exhausting to have to try to control them constantly. This obsession can make you too self-critical and you can consequently start to lose self-confidence and to develop some sort of social anxiety.

It is although possible to eliminate this embarrassment and to avoid people's uncomfortable stares. There are ways to greatly reduce, and even sometimes totally cure, facial twitches, in order to restore your peace of mind and enjoy a fully normal life. You might never have to worry again about facial grimaces or controlling any of these irritating twitches.

Facial tics are traditionally not treated or, in some severe cases or when the tics are shown to be caused by Tourette syndrome, patients may be given neuroleptics which are also given to treat diseases like schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder or obsessive-compulsive behaviors. These drugs were not developed to treat facial tics specifically and may not work all the time.

Furthermore, they are well known for their many undesirable side effects both on the short and long term. Depression, insomnia, weight gain, sexual dysfunction and anxiety are only a few of the many undesirable side effects which are associated with these drugs. Some of them can even worsen tics in the long run! But there are however other ways of treating facial tics which are fully natural and free of undesirable side effects.

Methods which work with (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and hypnosis have been developed especially for the purpose of treating facial tics. They can help you reduce them over time. In order to understand how such methods work it is important to know that tics are not a purely physical condition and are not fully involuntary either. They are an answer to an unconscious impulse to perform the movement of the tic. This desire disagreeably increases as you try to hold back from performing the movement. Such urges also increase in both frequency and intensity when the patient is stressed or anxious or when he is placed in certain situations.

Facial tics are a way to relieve pressure when you are feeling anxious or are facing stressful conditions. Such an unconscious association may be treated with hypnosis and NLP, because they are able to alter the kind of behavior your unconscious triggers when you are placed in certain situations. If acute, the therapist will suppress the facial tic by suggesting the unconscious make you move your toe instead. When you move your toe it is not apparent or visible to people around you. Hypnosis also makes you become a lot more relaxed overall, so it is a soothing experience. It will help you suppress both the anxiety and stress which worsen facial tics.

There are all sorts of facial tics: eye blinking, nose wrinkling, squinting, mouth twitches, grunting, facial grimacing or throat clearing. If tics have physiological causes, there are very strong emotional factors too. Stress and anxiety are without a doubt the most important of these factors. Tics have their roots in the unconscious mind as an answer to states of stress or anxiety; with self-hypnosis and NLP you will be able to change this association. Stress and anxiety may also be effectively fought in the long run with the stress relieving and soothing methods of hypnotherapy, which will significantly diminish the occurrence of facial tics.
